Having campaigned strongly on issues such as the re-introduction of college fees, water charges and child benefit, will Ciara Conway now vote in support of a budget that goes against everything she stands for and everything she canpaigned on??
I cant believe that any prospective Labour TD would campaign on these issues knowing full well that they would have to backtrack once elected??
Deputy Conway singled out one of her FG constituency colleagues campaign slogans during her address to the Labour Delegate Conference, which decided to go into Govt with Fine Gael, for suggesting that the Govt should live within its means.
A lot of chickens about to come home to roost for Deputy Conway!!!

She'll vote with the Labour party of course. Like all politicians, campaign on the premise to represent the constituents and once elected represent the party

Some background.

Ciara Conway is a Waterford Based Labour socialist who has a masters degree in Social Work and worked before in Barnados.

She is also a single mother so it must be a strain to attend Government in Dublin also.

Ciara Conway said:
“I believe the people who have the most should pay the most. It has to be more
equitable. Reducing the minimum wage and bringing people in who previously
didn’t have to pay levies, I think that’s criminal.”
When asked if the country can afford not to impose levies on the lowest earners, she said, “I
think we need to have a more balanced approach to that. There has to be reform.”

Things are looking up so. What with 100k plus expenses for 5 years and a life pension later. The price of socialism is deflating like everything else.

With respect, you must be naive if you vote for Labour and dont realise how they will act after an election. Labour have always had one attitude which is to go into power with...whoever.

In a sense, Labour has proven to be a method for the right wing to undermine the working class they claim represent by drawing the working class vote away from actual left wing alternatives.

Of course she will support the budget. She and other Labour TDs will tell their constituents that they "tried their best" but that the economy is in dire straits and they had to put the "country" first. They are old hands at that kind of thing and Ms. Conway will learn the ropes very soon.

What pension would she have for 5 years as a TD, and when would she be able to claim it?

How do you know those things are in the Budget? They may not be.

So should Ciara Conway and other like minded TDs vote against the budget and then what. THe problem isn't what's in the budget its the fact that the country had been run and ruled by an elite inner circle of FFers and their friends in business. People like Ciara Conway are the start of a long change process not an over night magic solution.

Exactly. The whip system employed by the government parties will see she doesn`t step out of line. She is undoubtedly the weakest of our sitting local TD`s. Like Halligan she didn`t show up to any of the pre election debates (Halligan showed up for WLR debate only) as this would have clearly demonstarted her weaknesses. Just listen to any of the media interviews she has done - very weak indeed. The whip system subverts democracy and puts the party before the constituents who elect theTD`s. Joke really.

Of course she will vote with the Government. She will then send her campaign people around for the next election to tell people that she didn't want to vote for all the bad stuff and that if she's not voted back in that 8 people will lose their jobs.

Just like one of the TD's in my constituency did last time before he lost his seat.Wexford FF I won't mention his name.

You do know it's not a real physical whip, don't you? Deputy Conway is Constitutionally entitled to vote against the government on the budget if she wishes, without being lashed across the back, or being removed from Dail Eireann. Of course she may be expelled from the Labour Party, but if she is really doing what her constituents want, they can re-elect her at the next election, regardless of what the Labour Party says.

How's that for democracy?
