Well do we need a lady that's not for turning to sort out the mess we are in. I am sure Maggie would have:
1- Stood up to the public sector unions and cut pay, pensions, perks and personnel.
2- Reformed the HSE.
3- Scrapped FAS.
4- Culled Quangoes.
5- Limited welfare to those in genuine need.
to name but a few.

Ahh the maggie myth.

Having grown up in London during her tenure, no.

She ripped the guts out of the country to feed the city, and the people have never been the same since.

No one needs a maggie.

Margaret Thatcher - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
6. Sold off 1.5 million acres of Coillte land to Bertie's Forestry Federation crowd.
7. Closed every remaining public hospital and blamed the resulting death toll on union intransigence.
8. Privatised water supply. The private utilities would then award their directors enormous bonuses, and sack all current civic or county council employees.
9. Privatised electricity supply. The private utilities would then award their directors enormous bonuses, and sack all current ESB employees.
10. Sold every heritage site in Ireland to private companies. Newgrange, for example, would then be owned and operated by Newgrange Enterprises Inc., a British-owned company.
11. Introduced a poll tax on deprived areas of the country.
12. Introduced special tax breaks for News International and Sky Digital, to encourage Irish people to buy Sky dishes. Along with special tax penalties for RTE to force it into liquidation.
13. Encouraged the Irish public to invest their life savings in public flotations, and then warn them of the dangers of the market afterwards, when they lose everything.

What a marvellous country this would be to live in

Keynesian ro Monetarist to Keynesian to Monetarist... Is there no end to this vicious circle?

Do we ever learn? Thatcher was a war hungry neo liberal statist hag. Between her and Reagan this crisis was exacberated. Blair and Brown were actually worse again. Despite his dull, boring and meekish persona, John Major wasn't too bad.

We need a strong leader alright but not a Maggie, an iconic throwback to the bad old days of British imperialism. The mess does need to be sorted, though.

Thatcher, boring!
Naive right-wing fanboys in their bunkers think that someone like that would stand up to the vested interests. Thatchers sort ARE the vested interests. We already live in Thatchers dreamworld where the poor and middle classes pay 10s of biollions of corporate welfare to keep the financial gravy train alive whilst real workers can't get jobs and public services are slashed.

Can I finish the top Top 20 ?

14. Adopt the Boston (pre Obama plans) rather than Berlin approach to healthcare.

15. Let Michael O'Leary gobble up Aer Lingus and encourage flight attendants to lap dance with passengers to increase revenue.

16. Privatise Post and Passport Offices, all public transport and anything else that moves.

17. Abolish Defence Forces, privatise security and hire mercenaries on contract.( N.B.:Call Mark Thatcher)

18 24-hour standby transport (helicopter and top range Mercs) for all TDs.

19. Admit all foreigners, esp those without English, and house in holiday complexes.

20. Make shopping the new religion and opium of the people.

The same Thatcher who championed deregulated capitalism at the expense of pretty much everything else? The deregulated capitalism that actually caused this 'mess'?

Nah.

Britain was the cradle of the first industrial revolution. What state is British manufacturing now in comparison to 1979?

A lot of Thatcher bashing going on here. But if I recall correctly; and I was young at the time; about 200,000 Irish people who would have been otherwise unemployed here were able to go to the UK and find jobs under the Thatcher government. I know a lot of them today and they live quite comfortably because of the employment they were able to find then.

Harney already weighs as much as an Iron Lady, so maybe we could just break out some metallic spray paint?

Yes exactly, we need somebody to open the door to 200,000 extra immigrants at a time of high unemployment. Nice one!

You really need to read up on your history. There was then as there is today open immigration between Ireland and the UK.

Reform yes,Iron Lady No.

Yes Ireland needs to be reformed that's beyond dispute...However Thatcherism is not the answer...It was the neo-Thatcherite polices that have caused Irelands severe economic problems in the first place...

Reform yes...Iron Lady no...
