Lads and ladettes, I have not seen a thread on this but legendary RTE newscaster, Don Cockburn has passed on. he certainly came across as a very nice man and very competent broadcaster.

Don Cockburn RIP

And what a name he had, it even outdoes Gay Byrne!

Please merge if a thread already exists, TBH I would be surprised if this is an opening thread, but I couldn't find one!

A true man of integrity. A gentleman to meet.

A proper newscaster. Never seemed to let bias interfere with delivering the facts.

RIP,

Back in the day he, Charles Mitchell and Maurice O'Doherty were the most trusted voices in Ireland, and had class.

RIP.

Always will remember how he just did his job so well. No slanted bias or virtue signalling just read the news without an opinion. RTE have nobody of that ilk now or at least i don't think so as i very rarely get information from them at this stage.

Regrets on his death, but don't understand much of what is posted here. Reading the news is just that, reading the news.

But they are guests in all our homes or at least used to be.

I had the pleasure of attending a meeting with him in regards to a charity event a long, long time ago.

He was a consummate gentlemen and seemed to be genuinely interested in what effects the event would have on the issue in question.

He wasn't there to mark a card or self publicize. He genuinely seemed to care.

RIP.

You probably are post the era when RTE opened with an announcement along the lines of "RTE anseo agaibh" at six bells and closed down with "Closedown" at 11 or 12pm. For many, it was the only channel available. These guys were rock stars.

What you receive is an electronic message selected by a culturally prejudiced editor promoting some agenda and deciding what facts you are entitled to see or hear about.

It might sometimes be news but the bulk of it is, and always has been, utterly irrelevant to the average persons daily life other than as something to gossip or chatter about.

What is news?
The old saying "No news is good news" acquires deeper meaning with each passing year.

Anyway RIP Don..
