Just when I thought that some of the the bad perceptions I thought of them were untrue one of the few SP councillors in the country goes ahead and makes these statements. Yea Matthew the red flag of communism is some day going to fly over Fingal County Council and replace our national flag. I have a mix of pity and anger at the brass neck of the Socialist Party. If only their voters knew exactly what they were voting for when they elected three of them as TD's last year.

"A FINGAL councillor has warned against flying the Irish flag outside County Hall for fear of offending non-nationals living here.

Blanchardstown-based Cllr Matthew Waine opposed a motion proposed by Cllr Daire Ni Laoi (SF) to hoist the Tricolour at the councils HQ in Swords.

The Solidarity Party public representative was one of just two who voted against it, suggesting that the red flag of Marxism and Socialism should be flown instead.

He said: We have one of the most multi-cultural populations in the whole country living in Fingal, and I think we need to consider the sensitivity of this.

The issue of religion, language, nationality all of those issues are extremely sensitive and weve seen how that can play out to divide people.

I would prefer to see the flagpoles used to express solidarity, so for example on the week of Pride, we should show the Rainbow flag.

I think we should fly the flags of minority groups, like Pavee Point.

I come from the tradition of the workers movement which doesnt see the country of your birth as being anything significant.

I would prefer to see the red flag fly outside County Hall, and maybe in the future that will be the case."

I had to look up what SP stood for...

Surely that says a lot about how relevant they are... ???

Crackpot Shinners and crackpot SPanners arguing about flegs. Spare us, please..
I don't think it a issue worthy of much debate. Flying the national flag should just be a given where proposed on county buildings.

Nutjobs. Thankfully they'll never get more than a few % of the vote.
If they ever even got near double digits, I'm sure they'd fall victim to the 'split', such would be the mass hysteria within their ranks

I can't see why they don't just come to some arrangment and instead of an 'either/or' situation with the Pavee Point flag and the Irish flag, they could just fly a tricolour with the picture of a caravan superimposed on it. That way all the scab picking commie and nationalist cranks that the hard of thinking elected could focus their attention on something that matters..

They could fly the red flag over Dunnes stores when it has been nationalized as proposed by Ruth Coppinger.
Then, onto Dell.

Not surprising if they had their way we would all be back living in the commonwealth.

I thought this would be a resurrection of the old argument about the Tricolour being a bourgeois flag.

One of the achievements of the Belfast Wolfe Tone Society was the publication in 1967 of a pamphlet by Fred Heatley on Henry Joy McCracken, a Protestant and a hero of the United Irishmen and the 1798 rebellion in the north. This had prompted the Ulster Museum to put on an exhibition about McCracken and BBC Northern Ireland and Ulster Television to feature the bicentenary of his birth. The following year the Belfast society promoted the commemoration of another Irish patriot, James Connolly. A meeting in February 1968 brought together representatives of the Wolfe Tone Society, the Communist Youth League, the CPNI, the QUB Republican Club, the Republican Clubs, the NDP and Dúchas, Council of Irish Tradition. A series of lectures was arranged, as well as a céilí and film show. On 9 June there was a parade down the Falls Road to the house in which Connolly had lived while he was in Belfast. There a commemorative plaque was unveiled by Connolly's son, Roddy Connolly. The event was marred, however, by the refusal of the Young Socialists to march behind the Irish tricolour, which they described as a 'bourgeois flag'. It had been included in the first place on the insistence of the republicans, who refused to march without it.

Why do these people believe that immigrants who have chosen to come here want some kind of safe space where expressions of national identity are muted?! Immigrants send their children to play GAA, learn tin whistle and wear green soccer jerseys because they like and respect the culture they have joined.

Whose party would you rather go to - the self-confident host, full of character and strong views but welcoming of diverse opinion; or the one who doesn’t allow music or any vaguely controversial discussion in case a guest gets offended?

Then, onto Dell.
Nationalising the Dell plant and keeping all the workers on at taxpayers expense to do what God only knows... (because the Dell orders left with Dell)... that was when I knew without doubt that Ruth is a joke and I can't imagine I'll ever change my mind about that.

Should hardly be a surprise. It's been Socialist Party policy for decades that Ireland should rejoin the UK. They are quite blatantly a fifth-column outfit run from London.

The Tricolour, as provided for in Bunreacht na h-Éireann, flies outside the County Hall where I live. It is accompanied by the local authority's flag, and the flag of the European Union.

Far be it for me to speak on behalf of or defend SP policy but that is not their position.

Pure idiocy which might actually encourage xenophobia since he seems to be suggesting that non-nationals are de facto anti-Irish.

This is outrageous stuff considering the history of this country. I've never lived in Fingal but I've meet and lived with immigrants here from all over. Never once heard anything like that from any of them. Who does this guy think he is to falsely represent the views of immigrants and demean our flag?
