The appeal is not on his moral fibre, rather his utility:

Bertie Ahern to be asked to rejoin Fianna Fáil in Dublin Central
Motion to invite former taoiseach and party chief passed unanimously at meeting
...“Bertie is a vast vessel of knowledge with regard to winning elections so why wouldn’t we use him,” said Mr Mohan[Chairman of Fianna Fáil in Dublin Central].
Bertie of course resigned rather than be pushed by Michael Martin - now he looks set to rejoin

Fianna Fáil branch pass motion calling for Bertie Ahern to be invited back into party - Independent.ie
The motion, tabled by veteran party member and Ahern loyalist Chris Wall states that party headquarters should be informed that Mr Ahern will be invited to rejoin the party.

Mohan said about 30 people were at the meeting and the motion was voted on after “a deep, meaningful discussion”.
What will Martin do ?

If he stands in the next election - which sitting TD is vulnerable ?

Paschal Donohoe (FG)
Mary Lou McDonald (SF)
Maureen O'Sullivan (Ind)

Recall by then - Mary Lou may be SF leader - Paschal, FG's OC for Information Terrorism has his eyes on his parties' leadership also. Maureen O'Sullivan is currently 65.

From the Mahon Report .......................................................................................The tribunal's final report noted that: "Much of the explanation provided by Mr Ahern as to the source of the substantial funds identified and inquired into in the course of the tribunal's public hearings was deemed by the tribunal to be untrue." Our Former Taoiseach lied under oath according to Judge Alan Mahon

During the decade-and-a-half-long inquiry into the connections between Fianna Fáil politicians and developers seeking to have land rezoned in Dublin, Ahern explained that several donations made by wealthy party supporters into his account were personal "dig-outs"; they were donations from friends to help him cover legal bills after his divorce rather than payments from developers who the party had helped out in controversial planning applications.

But the report rejected Ahern's explanation. It focused on a payment of €165,000 that passed through his accounts. The tribunal said Ahern had failed to "truthfully account" for how he had obtained that sum.

The report highlighted another payment of 22,500 Irish punts into his bank account in December 1993. Regarding the tribunal and his evidence, Ahern had "not provided with a truthful account" the source of this money either. ............................................................................... In October 2011, figures obtained by Labour TD Anne Ferris showed that Ahern had claimed over €377,000 in expenses since leaving office three years previously. This included over €366,000 to employ secretarial assistants and €10,655 in mobile phone expenses.
On foot of the revelations, the government scrapped expenses for former taoisigh. Although we later discovered that Ahern and others claimed them up to three months after they were supposed to have been abolished.

But of course thats all ok according to Fianna Fail

Bertie back. Blair skulking into the limelight. Sarkozy lurking. Trump ascending.

If anybody was even thinking that maybe FF had changed, taking the lessons both their electoral defeat and the ruins they left the economy in had been learned, then they need only to look at this.

As pointed out, the Mahon tribunal was pretty damning and yet these self serving, party first and screw the public, FF's seem only to be thinking that Bertie can win them a few seats for bring him back.

Martin, whatever one may think of him, must have lost it when he heard about his carry on. He should demote everyone of these eejits

Says it all about Fianna Fail in the last 10 years that they have nobody capable of winning a seat other than yesterdays man. Thisi move reminds me of SF's decision to switch Gerry Adams to Run in Louth
A sniff of power and FF are back to their old tricks. Like all cancers, when they come back they always finish you off.

Poor Bertie quit when he thought that Tribunal findings of corruption had consequences.

Too much travelling overseas made him forget this is Ireland where the justice system is the corruptest of it all.

In fairness, a lot to expect I know, there were no findings of corruption against him. There were actually no proven or provable findings against him at all.

Michael Martins nightmare begins.

The rehabilitation of the Bert continues.

It began with RTE and a few soft appearances on Marian.

Now the FF test.

Does Michael stick to his guns or commission a report ?

He won't say too much I think [ Martin ] because Bert knows where the bodies are buried.

The idea of Micheal Martin being a clean break with the past when he was knee deep in the Galway Tent, Property Developer culture is laughable.
