Eamonn Gilmore famously brought the Dail to a standstill and nearly brought a tear to Brian Cowen's eye when he accused Brian Cowen of economic treason for continually inflating the property bubble long past the point of no return, however IMHO it's been the governments inaction since then that has been the real economic treason.

FF have known for years that to fix the problem they'll have to have a severe budget, but that with their slim majority (even 24 and 12 months ago) they were never going to get it past the Independents and back benchers - so what did they do to stay in power - defer, delay, deny - and get to a point where the EU is now calling the shots and telling the Opposition to fall into line.

This to me is the real treason - they have delayed dealing with the problem for 24 months to keep themselves in Government, delayed dealing with the scale and severity of the problem and continued to dig a deeper hole for the rest of us to climb out of. Brians Cowen and lenihan have hidden, lied and obfuscated their way through the past two years, cost untold extra billions to stay in power and have now handed the problem to Europe.

A good summary.

I agree 100% and have been saying so for some time.

Fianglo Fail have been frittering away our economic sovereignty in order to keep Brian Cowen's not insubstantial arse in a ministerial Merc.

If he had any statesmanship, patriotism, or even dignity, he would be off to the Áras.

Dithering is what they do.

They may be the world's best padded ditherers.

Lack of action on correcting the spending deficit and far to much action on the banking and property end. No action on that front would have been most welcome.

I agree, their failure to act two years has put us so deep in a hole that we are going to find it difficult to dig ourselves out of. Also, their failure to nullify the bank guarantee which they were perfectly entitled to do because of the lies the banks told has crippled us.

Guilty as charged

Great Post.

Yes they are guilty as charged and sentenced to serve out their days on €100k+++ pensions. Cowen arguably the most treasonous of them all will be watched round the clock by a team of Garda drivers in said fat-arsed Merc.

May god have mercy on their souls.

nail on the head. The Govt's inaction since Gimore's charge has been criminal.

Do FF actually think this will go away by itself?

They are going to lose the next election in any event, if they had any real sense of survivability they would pull up their sleeves now and start turning this country around.. but they wont so its up to the rest of us to sort this mess out.

Bring on the GE!!

The opposition must not acquiesce in the said treason by allowing the traitors to remain in power a minute longer than necessary. They must bring down the budget and force a GE.

Cowen and the rest of them should be tried for crimes against the state. They should have their pensions stripped and they and their families should be put into some shoebox apartments. They should also have their passports and citizenships removed for these economic traitors are no longer Irish.

what is treason as defined by the Irish courts? Is there an actual law? how come the Garda Siochana haven't pressed charges, Or the Courts?

It would be interesting to see if any of these things happened, but I doubt they would ever go that far!
If they did I am sure some representative would say something in an offhand manner and ruin the case against any individual charged!

The Icelandic PM is facing just charges. He was complicit, as were the Finance minister and senior bankers in Iceland of destroying their enonomy. Notice however that their bond spreads are now half of what ours are. These cretins in our government and their green lackeys are every bit as complicit in the destruction of the Irish economy. Not happy with that they continue with green support and the support of gombeen independents to strangle whats left of our society. Unless we have an immediate election and a new government with a clear mandate to follow corrective policies we will continue to sink into oblivion.

If Brian Cowen knew more about Anglo than he made out, and I stess IF, and this country falls to its knees in the coming months, he has some serious questions to answer.

I agree with this Cowen was in denial and even now is only fighting a rearguard action to try and protect what little is left of his and FF's reputation.

What would Ollie Rehn have done if he didn't approve of the Government's budget?

If there isn't any legal right for a former Taoiseach (and President*) to retain a State Car and Garda driver, then I trust that the incoming government will promptly withdraw them from Bertie, Bruton, Reynolds and Biffo and I suppose in the interests of equal treatment, we'd have to remove them from Cosgrave and Garret too (at least they have free bus passes to help them to get around.)

I suppose the former Taoisigh could also be given exchequer-funded taxi accounts - with a limit of say €1,000 a month, so they can avail of free transport whenever they need to travel for official purposes - attendance at meetings of The Council of State, for example.

* Does Robbo still have a State car and driver, can anyone advise?
