I watched the first one. He claims we can never know what is more efficient due to multiple possible results. Then how can we plan an economy?
Socialist planned economies are not interested in the bourgeois concept of "efficiency." They are interested in allowing everyone to work and allowing everyone to have a home, free education, health care, etc.

A very interesting talk from Richard Wolff:

YouTube - "Efficiency" is Nonsense
I find it interesting/depressing, how this concept of "efficiency" has lodged itself within realms outside of business/industry. I'm involved in the learning and preservation of two arts that have centuries of human endeavour behind them. In this current generation, both these arts are in serious danger of dying out because people refuse to learn these arts in their totality. Instead, people who have had superficial exposure to these arts are teaching them in a severely truncated form that is more "efficient" to modern society and are having great success. I'm not against innovation, but these individuals also constantly demean the "traditional" ways as been outmoded and useless. The deeper, more "human" aspects of the arts are being lost.

How "efficient is reading a Dostoevsky novel nowadays?

Efficiency is a code word.

When I hear politicans and the fat cat bosses banging on about efficiency...It is just a code word for shafting the working classes...Like mass sackings, cutting back on social welfare, raising taxes, cutting the minimum wage,etc...

There is clearly efficiency when speaking about specific measurable usually scientific processes. When talking about societal developments then efficiency clearly becomes vague and fluffy and largely pointless. It is usually best to stick with what has been proven to work in the past and only make slight gradual changes.

I agree fully. This cancerous idea of "efficiency" has turned society into a dumbed down cultural wasteland. If a film doesnt give you an emotional sugar surge every 30 seconds, todays audiences will find it "boring."

Art increases when a society has a surplus of production. Right now society is not being very productive.
The last fifteen years have been some of the worst years in all of history for artistic work.

According to that video they wont be able to achieve it.
What you are missing is the fact that Socialism doesnt depend on knowing the future.

Thats the bottom line a chara. Words like "competition" and "efficiency" really just mean turning human beings into "human resources" that profit can be squeezed out of.

and states are larger today than they were 15 years ago. Good to see you see the connection.

What you are missing is the fact that Socialism doesnt depend on knowing the future.
How can you plan something without having an idea on what the plan will do?

You plan on the moral grounds of making live better for people. It might not always happen, but that the only sane way to do things. Capitalists, on the other hand, only plan to make a small elite more and more fantastically wealthy.

Has that happened? Richard Wolff tells us that US wages are at 1978 levels, while the bosses have been making unheard of profits.
