Shocking indeed.

The first question that came to me was "was drink involved?"

Too early to say, but it appears there were 8 people in one vehicle. Unless it's some kind of SUV that's designed to seat that many people, the question of gross misjudgement sadly arises. This is a terrible crash.

Can you learn to spell properly please?

It is a fact that most crashes occurring in the early hours of the morning are caused by at least one driver being well in drink.

It appears that all eight were in one car. No mention of what type of car, but no reference to it being aminibus or anything like it.

A truly horrendous time for the families.

Yes.

8 in one car, 7 dead.
Driver of ther other car alsodead.

Car with the 8 was involved in a minor crash moments before but failed to stop and continued onwards, crashing a few hundred metres from the site of the first collission.

It didn't happen in the early hours, it happened at half ten. Obviously that doesn't mean drink wasn't involved, but you still seem to be jumping to conclusions.

I wasn't jumping to any conclusions. Half past ten is late enough for alcohol to be involved.

You jumped to the conclusion that it happened in the early hours. And you don't know yet if drink was involved, 8 people inside one vehicle is a potential impairment to good driving all by itself.

RTE reporting that the vehicle with eight occupants was a VW Passat. It collided with a Toyota Corolla (one occupant). All those involved have been killed bar the driver of the Passat.

Oh FFS!!!! Pure lunacy!!

My sympathies now lie firmly with the family of the Toyota driver.

Also reporting a failure to stop at a previous minor crash on the part of the 8 person car.

Here comes the queue.

The first queue is the speed freaks on this site and elsewhere who tell us that speeding is in no way dangerous, has nothing to do with causing accidents or making their results more severe.

The next queue is those saying that measures against drunk driving are really just discrimination against rural Ireland by thim above in Dublin, sure what's wrong with driving home with a few pints on you, wouldn't rural Ireland be a terrible place if you couldn't. Also well represented on this site.

The third queue is those with the hysterical reactions any road safety measures, saying that all this nonsense about requiring people to have driving licences or roadworthy cars to drive is just the nanny-state gone mad.

All of the queues shout loudly and get a lot of attention most days, but not today. Today a different queue will get the attention. The queue, thousands long every year, of grieving family members will for a moment silence the other queues. But not for long.

Within days the other queues, with the loud mouths and strident claims, will shout them down.
