[editing title to show Pat Rabbitte claim on tv3 24.11.10]

What collateral might be demanded of Ireland in return for taking aid from the EFSF?

The question arises out of an article in tomorrow's FT spotted by dakid -

FT.com / Europe - Eurozone members pressed on debt plans

"In an interview, Jyrki Katainen, the Finnish finance minister, said he would propose a measure at the summit that would require countries seeking a bail-out to put up collateral before getting a loan from the European financial stability facility."

What have we got to put on the pawnbroker's counter?

So far, the collateral consists of Anglo-Irish and First National. The other member states want AIB as well but the government is holding out. :)

This is getting interesting. Pat Rabbitte says on VB 24.11 that he hears the EU wants us to put up our state companies as collateral for the bank bailout.

From the reaction of Pat Carey, it appears Rabbitte is correct in this.

This would amount to forced privatisation.

It is more likely to be protection for bilateral loan providers when we enter the restructuring phase in 3 years as proposed by Merkel.
