God forbid you had a son or daughter as a merchant seaman on one of the ships hijacked by pirates. The sooner the better they are annihilated and wiped out. Their is no place in the 21 century for piracy.

EU warships are beginning anti-piracy operations off the coast of Somalia.

RTÉ News: EU naval operation to counter piracy

We are told there is no such thing as an EU Army.

So who is driving the boats? Or have the silly media got it all wrong again?

...

EDIT:
Just under two hours after this thread was opened, and we are claiming no credit for this, RTÉ deleted the opening line of their report quoted above, and replaced it with this:

The EU has agreed to launch an anti-piracy naval operation off the coast of Somalia involving ships and aircraft from several nations.

Whatever prompted that editorial move, the use of the term 'EU warships' in connection with this expedition is widespread in the international media. See also here

Cannot see anything on rte.ie.

IT site is happy to go with this headline:

EU airstrikes target Somali pirates - The Irish Times - Tue, May 15, 2012

Are we now Legitimate Targets?

Seriously though as part of the EU we are now in a State of War with an irregular armed force

How long before we have a conflict with the regular armed Forces of a 'rogue' State?
What overblown nonsense! Aggrandizing swatting some pirates to a "State of War with an irregular armed force". Doubtless if a team of EU exterminators travel to help with a bug infestation outside the EU borders, there will be pompous demands to know who declared war on our behalf against the Roach Nation.

That's not the point

- they can blow the s.hit out of the pirates for all I care

The point is the EU is now at War with them

We may well be deploying naval forces in the near future to back them up

So who declared War on our behalf?
Doesn't the EU have some Committee for the War on Terror? If not, shouldn't it?

There is some civilian command structure over the EU warships and what the Times today calls EU helicopter gunships.

Piracy is a terrible scourge and has to be completely wiped out. These criminals have to be taught in the severest way possible that they cannot interfere with legitimate international shipping and get away with it. They have to learn that the EU will come down on them like a ton of bricks if they do not desist. TV pictures of destroyed bases, sinking and burning pirate vessels and lots of dead pirates are what is required. The EU navies have the resources to do just that and should get on with the job ASAP.

They will need to do a deal with the French or the British to provide replenishments.
When it comes to military matters in Western Europe and the EU, Britain and France are the only two which matter. Everyone else just does the paperwork.

Also, Britain is considering leaving the European Defence Agency.

Well that's not true is it? I am sure the families of Dutch, Italian and German soldiers who have died in Afghanistan don't see it that way. Those of other countries likewise.

Granted some could and should do more, but its better to leave such obnoxiousness aside.
