Europhile nation: Despite everything, we still love the EU.

Euroscepticism? Brexit? Such notions seem to hold no appeal in the Emerald Isle. A clear majority (55%) of Irish people profess themselves to have a positive image of the European Union according to the results of the latest Eurobarometer poll. The 55% figure includes those who have a "very positive" view and those who have a "fairly positive" view.

Compare that with 17% of Greeks and 26% of Cypriots. Only the Poles comes close to us at 51%.

You'll find the data on page 17 of this link. We're also by far the most optimistic about the EU's prospects as can be seen by the data on page 20.

Is our optimism and positivity well-placed or are we in the throes of an irrational bout of euro-phoria?

Chiefs -> Brits -> Catholic Church -> EEC/European Union.
And we love to be loved.
We love misery too, but are optimistic at heart.
We also think that 44 years of good results, means we should be favourable.
We think the euro is great, as we don't have to change currency (no insight into
effects of common currency).

In short, we never learn.

The optimism about prospects are quite startling.We're 7 percentage points ahead of the next most optimistic country - Lithuania.

And the Brits aren't the ones who hate it the most, not by a long shot.

I'd imagine the EU will have broken apart long before Ireland ever votes to leave it :D

I am very pro-EU but I wouldn't answer 'totally positive' to this question. 'Great idea but needs work' would be better.

It's what we call 'propaganda', like telling our primary schoolchildren how great the EU is.

Publishing figures stating that only 17% of Greeks feel positive about the EU (and only 35% in the EU28) doesn't sound like pro-EU propaganda....!
