Ex diplomat Sean Donlon's instructions to SF for Irish Unity

Ex diplomat and Marian Finucane regular Sean Donlon speaking at the MacGill Summer School made five main points to SF on pursuing Irish unity. These were -

* SF must take their seats in Westminster. Look what Lord Gerry Fitt achieved by taking his seats he claims.

* Donlon even says SF must stop thinking about achieving a majority in favour of unification. “There is no attraction or prospect, Brexit or not, of unity by numbers and without consent.”. (At least he'd have the support of the Solidarity Trots on that one :) )

* SF and in particular Mary Lou must stop talking about being in the endgame of Irish unity. “Does she ever stop to think about unionist consent?” he asks.

* SF must “tone down the commemoration of the IRA dead and the attendant rhetoric. Not all of us want to be reminded of your atrocities”.

* SF must stop “weaponizing “ the Irish Language. He says the language’s development should be left to grass-roots development.

So would this be enough for Donlon and others like him ? Would SF have to also change their name to Fianna Fail or Fine Gael also and the SDLP in the north ?

How do you `weaponize`your own language?

It should be pointed out that Donlon was nothing but hostile to Birmingham Six and Guildford Four campaigners and others trying to raise human rights abuses, discrimination, torture, collusion and state murders in the north while a diplomat in Washington. Which would make him a perfect guest for the Marian Finucane show and the lovies on it :)

Number 6.
- Deny that SF are a cult, & pretend that SF are a "movement".

Unification might happen - but not if Slabz Frenz are involved.

And it will be a failure if it means being further downtrodden into the nEU empire.

Given Donlon's track record on the Guildford Four and Birmingham Six I'd say if you do the exact opposite of everything he suggests and we'll have a united Ireland in no time.

SF cannot take seats until they get a mandate to do so. They don't now and won't seek one.

The GFA says 50%+1 of valid poll on a given day is sufficient. They could strive for more.

We are in the endgame for unity.

Their infiltration of Irish language groups and politicisation of the language is damaging to it and it would be great if the Irish language was de-shinnerised (indeed, the campaign for unity needs to be de-shinnerised).

And says the language’s development should be left to grass-roots development - but which would actually be facilitated by an Irish Language act similar to the Welsh one and agreed to in the St Andrews agreement. But what after that's done, SF ask the GAA to drop club and ground names such as Padraig Pearse, Wolfe Tone, O'Donovan Rossa etc ?

When ambassador to the US Donlon would target elected representatives who raised the issue of the Birmingham Six and indulge in the nod and a wink that they were guilty.

A few years back, I was at a social gathering and ended up spending some time in Donlon's company. Apart from an astronomically-inflated sense of entitlement, his need to attract attention reminded me of a sub who was sent on by mistake in the last minute of a county final during which the ball bounced off his àrse while he was ducking out of the way and went in for the winning goal and he has been boring the bollox off anybody who has come across him ever since with his story of how he single-handedly won the championship.

Then again, celebrity summer schools are tailor-made for gobshìtes like that.

He never murdered or maimed anyone . Or gave orders for same .
Perhaps that's why he never achieved anything. What a sick situation where it takes bombs and bullets to force a government to do what they should have been doing in the first place.
