FAS CE Schemes are a Gravy Train

It has been brought to my attention recently that many of those FAS CE schemes are a total waste of taxpayers money and are of no benefit to the participants. I have heard of widespread bullying of participants by supervisors who themselves have little or no qualifications. I am very familiar with 3 CE schemes in the west and midlands where some very bad practice is happening. One supervisor had participants working in an extension to his home.

Being a supervisor on a FAS CE scheme rewards a wage in excess of €700 pw and does not require any skill or qualification. I have also been informed that many of these Supervisory positions are filled with political influence.

Please respond if you know of any malpractice in any CE Scheme.

A bit of praise where it's due:

I was on 3 different FAS CE schemes in 1987 90 and 95.
In the first 2 we were working with the local community council and doing valuable work such as setting up a Citizens' Information Centre, publishing a community magazine etc.
In the 3rd one we were raising awareness of the environment among schoolchildren, but more to the point I got a lot of computer experience and ended up training (again with FAS) as a software developer and I have never looked back. A new career.

Are you currently employed as a software developer?

I come across a lot of CE schemes. They make a very big difference to the communities they are based in because of the services they provide, as well as in the employment they provide. I have seen them transform a lot of lives.

They are on 80 cents meal allowance per day, I read last week.
Would that Rody had been, too.

fas and the ce scheme were always about what is known as 'busywork'
I'm sure there is a general truth in that, but each scheme is defined to some extent by its locality and the people in it. Where these schemes have been pulled it has lead in many cases to a reduction in quality of life in the community it was in. In many cases the schemes provide basic services like street cleaning and maintenance that are provided as a matter of course in most countries. A lot of people have got computer and office skills through them. If they are stopped, do you think something better will be put in their place?

FAS supervisors have to manage big budgets, a lot of people and comply with a lot of regulations. If there are instances of abuse on CES schemes, it is a matter for control by FAS management. Oh, whoops.

Mary Harney has lead the charge more than once to do away with the schemes. That is almost enough recommendation for me.

In my area the CE scheme workers ran youth clubs and summer projects to get the kids off the streets and it was very successful until Mary Harney cut the number of CE schemes a few years ago.Not many of the CE workers went into full time work or continued their youth work on a voluntary basis which was a pity.

The starting salary for a CE Supervisor is approximately €22,500 (about €430 per week), so I wouldn't exactly describe it as a gravy train, especially if somebody was to be supporting a family on that salary, like many CE Supervisors I know. Many of the schemes do extremely worthwhile work and the vast majority of community centres around the country would not be able to stay open with their scheme. Perhaps some of the supervisors take advantage of their position but surely that's up to their liaison within FAS to identify and rectify, is it not? A national scheme cannot be rubbished purely because of of the actions of a minority of purely monitors low paid workers.

You apparently do yourself. Have you informed the authorities?

Send who to Universities? Characters off the dole? Universities have their standards and rightly so.

No they don't, they have no standards what so ever, other than getting x number of points, thats it, I can get into science with 300 points (which a retarded chimp could get) knowing nothing about science and having only put it down as a backup, while getting Es in every science subject and never having passed an exam in it.

My point in asking is that these fake useless courses are clearly not the way to go, why not send people to real educational institutions? Instead of them messing around making power point presentations all day and getting a cert for it that they can't really use?

Yes, also in my area, workers on the CES doing most of their work on private properties of the supervisors family and friends, (I'm talking building houses and sheds and related works)
also a lot of improvement work on local facilities were ran through the fas books, (6 figure amounts)
supervisor and lots of family involved in working with FAS Offices and also running other 'upskilling' classses..
same stroke artist has never been involved in something that did not have access to government/public money

would like any info/experience from others on how to forensically look at accounts of a fas related scheme as I am sick of the rampant corruption in this bannana republic

It is true that most fas supervisors are pulled in due to political allegience ,but the scheme workers do wonderful work, the country would be a rubbish tip without them, and yes they learn many skills ,computers, driveing etc ,expand the schemes Cowen ,its so obvious ,give people of all ages the chance to work again.

FAS CE Schemes are a gravy train

Very much so.
Have been for 10 years.
Changed my life in oh so many ways.
I've met many more like you, they are great at getting single parent's back into the workforce and like yourself professional careers ie photographers accountants and teachers. CE schemes are 1 of the few gov. idea's that got people of welfare. We cannot complain about the CE worker's as even now are deeply involved in the working's of all our communities
