This letter was sent out by the Moyross Jobs Club in Limerick to people registered with it. This jobs club is funded by FAS.

The letter is an advertisement for positions vacant in a British Army regiment, the Royal Irish Rangers who currently preparing to head off to another tour in afghanistan where they have already suffered many deaths & serious injuries.

When people registered as unemployed with the jobs club receive such a letter they are obliged to call in and inquire about the job in question. Otherwise they risk being cut off by the jobs club which has potential implications for their dole payments.

Is the FAS answer to rising unemployment to ship young people off to fight in Britain's latest war?

From a government that claims to be neutral but allows the US military to use Shannon.

Im equally disgusted but not at all surprised by this treasonous act.

This is a good thing, as the construction industry will never reach its old heights, and the type of people who worked in it are perfect fits for "other ranks" in the army.

If true then this is intolerable

I'll check it out with a phonecall. I will be amazed (and angry) if it turns out to be true.

This is a major scandal if it turns out to be true. It is sickening that an arm of our state would be acting as a recruiter for the British Army.

It's treason to recruit young Irishmen and women to fight against Islamic extremist scum in Afghanistan?

Of course it was treason to join the British Army and fight against Hitler too wasn't it?

Typical deranged republicans - historically you people supported Napoleon, the Kaiser, Hitler and Stalin and today you are on the side of Islamic extremists.

Is there any tyrant or bunch of fanatics that Irish republicans will not support?

Incredible... I know small numbers do join the British Army (and they are free to do so), but for an arm of the state to actively encourage young people to join the army of a foreign state is simply incredible! Frankly unfu&*believable!!

Hopefully not the greens!!

But, regardless of republican protests, this FAS activity is disgraceful. It is not emigration, it is selecton of cannon-fodder.

Is it not slightly worrying that the government want to take people from an area infested with gangs, and all the trouble that goes with that for the residents of Moyross and Limerick, and send them for ammunition training.

This is outrageous and nothing short of treason by FAS. Good scoop Williewatch! It'll be interesting to see the fallout from this.

Lets keep this debate on track. It is not about Muslims, Hitler, Stalin or anybody else.

It is simply about an arm of the state, of our neutral country funding recruitment for an army currently at war.

If you want to discuss Ireland's position in the second world war then you are in the wrong thread.

I can assure you that the letter is genuine
It doesn't look all that genuine.

Why would a Jobs Club bother to send out a letter (55c a pop) mentioning only the (incorrect) name of a recruiter, and giving no other details?

Sure, I can think of one possible answer: a lazy adminstrator sent out something - however sloppy and politically incorrect - rather than doing nothing.

What would be more convincing, williewatch, is if a member of the Jobs Club could lay their hands on some other proof that FÁS is acting as a recruiting sergeant for the British Army. Anything?
Remember that a lot of us were fooled by the forged "canvassing/talking points" letter on FF headed paper, which was a bit more sophisticated than this.

Indeed, that clown just went totally off the point at hand.

So what?

It's a disgrace the Ireland remains neutral in the War on Terror.

I'm sure Islamic extremists care about our neutrality.

Tipperary was always good hunting ground for brit army recruits too. As for supporting Stalin -wasnt one of your heroes ' Churchill ' a friend and partner of hes isnt that right Tippman!

Its not just that an institution of the state would promote the brit army and encourage young Irish people to travel abroad to kill and be killed in someone elses war -But that they might cut off their welfare payments if they refuse to join.

Thats fanatical Fianna Fail republicanism for ya!

People used to hard physical work, working in teams, mostly outdoors and mostly male.

It has to be a hoax. What is the Royal Irish Army for a start?
