The FG leadership contest is due to kick off officially in under 48 hours with Enda Kenny expected to announce his departure date. Will his timeline be enough to fend off a no confidence motion? So far a few names have been mentioned, Leo Varadkar seems to be front runner and would be the most popular candidate for the general public. Simon Coveney is blueshirt royalty and may appeal to the base. Other contenders are calamity Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald, Richard Bruton and young gun Minister for Health Simon Harris.

FG is a Conservative party containing many conservative Catholics especially in rural areas, are they ready for a gay leader? These are many issues and sub plots that may come up.

Maybe this thread could be one mega thread where we post all things FG leadership contest. Rather than, multiple threads discussing more or less the same thing.

Seems like a nice person but goes he have the grit needed for the job in such uncertain times. Do any of them?

Possibly only Bruton.
Bruton comes across as a light weight and is routed on a regular basis on tv appearances. He is also a fantical europhile, hardly what we need at a time we need more scrutiny of what Irelands relationship with the EU might be like post Brexit.

The funny part of this post is that "TheWolf" was complaining on other threads for going off topic!

Post #4, bit early to be going off topic!

I'm lovin it.

If Irish Times front page tomorrow is correct then Kenny is trying to buy time, by not signalling a definitive timeline and saying he will announce his timeline after returning frost Patrick's day in Washington.

Surely if this is true it will only pro long the uncertainty, jockeying for position and in fighting within FG. Clearly a case of Kenny putting himself first, surely a motion of no confidence will have to happen asap if that is the case?

What about Michael Noonan returning to the leadership of FG ?
Disaster he looks old and tired, not to mention some of the revelations in the media this week. He was toxic to the electorate when he was previous leader nearly presided over the death of the party.

Spoke with a few blue shirts earlier seem certain Coveney has it in the bag, Varadkar will get little support outside Dublin supposedly.
Very interesting.

Guess that the motion will be going forward then.

Imagine if Kenny announces that he has decided that he WILL lead FG into the next General election ?

The impression I was given was that Cork, Kerry were in the bag for Coveney and Noonan would tie up Limerick and by getting support of the Kenny wing he would get the majority of the western blushirts. The Kenny and rural wings have any anybody but Leo mentality. Harris is viewed as a leader but not now and Fitzgerald has dropped way down the pecking order.

Some have even expressed surprise that she is even considering putting her name forward after her disastrous tenure in the department of justice.

FF and SF would be caling for a public holiday and the pubs would have to stay open for 24 hours for the FF/SF celebrations.
