It appears FG and Labour will be both launching their budget submissions later today at separate press conferences.

Expect to see the FF fightback start now, targeting the differences between the submissions, and probably particularly targeting Labours since they are the biggest thread to FF seats.

Thoughts?

When are they launching?

Everyone assumes that FG and Labour will form the next government. But what will be the policies of that government? At present, the policies of the two parties diverge considerably on a range of issues. Agreeing a programme for government, as the IMF taps its fingers in advance of reviewing Ireland's progress in Q1 2011, could become a political roller-coaster as FG seeks to commit Labour to the hard measures that are needed IN ADVANCE of entering government rather than quickly form a government (as in 1982) and then find that Labour has a veto on what is needed.

What will the policies of any Government be? The same applies to a Lab/FF one, a FG/FF one or a Lab/SF/'all the others' one. Even the greens/ff won't be going in with a joint programme...

I don't think you'll see a joint plan from any combination of parties prior to the vote, it's about maximising each parties hand for the negotiations.

One thing is certain, FF won't be involved. Its in each of FG, Lab and SF's interest to break that party once and for all and ensure it never gets above 65-70 seats again.

What odds on one of the party making default an explicit budget/election promise? Has anyone gone that far? SF?

lol, whats the snow got to do with it? They always release theirs a few days beforehand. Ensures sunday paper coverage.

Indo suggests FG to reduce Vat from 13.% to 12% as a stimulus and labour capping state salaries at 200k. The 200k thing doesn't effect civil servants (top pay 198k) but would affect Ministers and the top echolons of the health service.

No impact on semi states though... :(
