Galway recently beat off competition from Limerick and the Three Sisters bid from Waterford/Kilkenny/Wexford for the 2020 European City of Culture. As part of this one puts their best foot forward and the Arts Officer for Galway City Council decided that Taafe's on Shop Street needed a re-paint in line the Galway's 'making waves' bid for the judges who would be walking by. The owner agreed and they painted this:

Maybe not to everybody's taste but probably better than the general run down appearance it has on Shop Street. The Planning Enforcement section of the Council though has now sent the owner a warning letter to take it down, hence OP title, for the love of God. The Council has form in this regard when they ordered the owners of nearby Claddagh Jewellers on Shop Street to take this mural down:

What's the problem you ask, well like a certain SSM mural, they need planning permission apparently. What say p.ie?

Galway City Council ask for mural they commissioned to be removed

They should have applied for planning permission. Simple!

In fairness, painting a giant cat would truly have been in keeping with the place!

Not sure what the story is with the Claddagh one, it's really nice. The thing with the one on Taafe's, Galway City Council painted it, so therefore the Arts department should have been co-served with the warning letter. I take your point that as per planning regulations, planning permission is required.

When will they get around to locking up the owners of Tribeton restaurant - in probably Galway's only modernist building - for the paint job they have done? So ugly that it looks like even the internet, the home of scat, dare not show it's hideousness.

You have the option of making a written complaint to the Planning Enforcement section.

Or dogs. The way she would lure Americans in with an Aran sweater in the window, only to have them chased out of the place by the dogs and stench.

Our politicians, Cllrs, P.S, have absolutely no understanding of culture, if there is money in it. ?

That's their culture..

Yep - either you get planning permission or it's a free for all.

Ah but here's the rub, the wheels of bureaucracy run slowly and you could have such a mural/promotion up for months before having to take it down.

The hell it does. Munster farmers have too much sense to drive detractors into Limerick.
Get you down to County Limerick rural roads sometimes Carlos and you will really be in danger! lolpetunia
