The Ultimate Démarche: France Wants to Oust English From the EU
The French president, Emmanuel Macron, wants to make French grand again and replace English as the default language in EU institutions, the way it was before Britain joined the bloc in 1973. With the U.K. negotiating to leave the EU next spring, he is eager to restore the linguistic ancien regime.

It's been shot down many times since the Brexit vote.
We have a veto over it and we won't even have to use it. French isn't widely spoken in the member states that joined since 1990 (i.e. a majority of member states).

Doubtful it will happen. English is now a global de facto lingua franca and the main foreign language learnt in almost very country including France.

It wont happen because the French will be too disgusted by the way everyone else speaks French.

Not gonna happen and I doubt the French will even push it. English has long won the battle as the international language of mass communication - if anything, its nearest competitor would be Spanish, not French. Apart from the Romance-speaking EU countries, German is more likely to be the third language in most member states (after English and their own language/s), rather than French.

Given the context of Brexit I think that this makes a lot of sense- but why French and not German?
