The problem with discussions such as this is that too many people are not interested in an objective analysis of whether or not we should retain the Seanad.

All they are interested in doing is making the issue a tool for partisan party political abuse.

All the polls at the time showed that virtually all the no voters want reform not the status-quo. It is self-serving propaganda if the politicians say otherwise. Noone on the no campaign was arguing for the status-quo.

But even without reform, the status-quo is better than unicameralism. I had felt otherwise when the referendum was first announced but since then the govt has shown an autocratic streak exemplified by the Star Chamber-type powers that wanted in the Oireachtas Inquiries referendum. They have a two-thirds Dail majority. A weak Upper House is the last protection against legislative excess in this land apart from the Supreme Court.

It is true it can't normally delay for more than 3 months (in some cases 9), but as Shane Ross's sinking of the ban on election polls showed under the FF-PD govt, there are other ways it can mess up a govt's agenda on occasion.

don't abolish it, reform it!

such bullsh!t

badly run campaign to abolish - a bit of scaremongering by no camp - and we blew are chance to abolish this waste of space
The campaign by the celebrities of media and academia to maintain an expensive talking shop for their smooth talking cronies, plus the fact that people who were in favour of the policy during the election did a u-turn and acted the hypocrite, was successful.

That explains why all the similar smooth talking ************************e during the Celtic tiger was so effective and why it eventually ended with a bankrupt country.

We never ************************************g learn.

It is Mr Kenny who should be held accountable wasting 15 million taxpayers money,
completely irresponsible behaviour, starting something and unable to finish it.

You post that then follow it with this ...

The insider elite in media and academia said nothing when the country was being bankrupt during the boom but got the finger out to campaign to maintain the privileges of their cronies in the Seanad referendum.

Finding fault with my highlighting that fact is irrational.

Does Fanny Fitz have anything to say about the gamblers holding bonds for the bank of Seanie Fitz ?

Or would expecting such a statement be "demeaning" ?
