On this evenings Last Word Gabriel Byrne takes "the gathering" to task with some choice words!
Today FM Media Player
begins at 20 minutes.

Alot of Irish Americans he said are pretty annoyed with this gathering thing. People he has met in his role as cultural Ambassader said
"we were forced out. We have no work for ya. Get a job elsewhere and come back on holiday and give us your wages"
"a culture of gangsterism in Ireland"

and most Irish Americans are sick of Ireland and its generational thing of ignoring the diaspora and only caring when the come back to "get the money outta them"

People in Ireland "couldnt give a ************************" about the diaspora

one irish american Byrne spoke to said it was "a scam" and that "he didnt need an invitation to visit his own country"

Also got the impression that he thought Kenny was a gob************************e.

The rest of the earlier Interview is quite good were Byrne talks about living in New York, the storm and the Presidential election.

After his Interview Matt then played some interview recorded earlier with some Faillte Ireland guy handling the gathering in New York. He said the usual PR spiel but then said that everyone is getting involved even Gabriel Byrne!!

The whole Gathering concept is such blatant hucksterism that only the truly stupid members of the diaspora will be anything other than insulted by it. It's an indictment of the paucity of thinking by Official Ireland that this made-up 'celebration' is considered to be a way of riding out the recession by means of riding our ex-pats.

There's an interesting article by Matt Williams in today's Irish Times about growing up as an Irish Australian. He says that he always considered himself Irish while growing up in Oz, but when he came here was treated as a Plastic Paddy. The Gathering is just a further expression of contempt by Official Ireland of our descendants abroad. The concept embarrasses me, and if we as a nation had any real pride and weren't a bunch of greedy gombeens fumbling in the greasy till, it would embarrass all of us.

Heard it earlier and he was 100% right in what he said. Kenny is a joke leader and we have a joke government.

Hyperbolic, but I actually agree with you. It's a disgrace, and the perfect illustration of the peasant attitude at the heart of this government

Irish America should tell ''the Gathering'' to go f*** itself.
Irish Americans have never needed a pathetic money making excuse by an avaricious government to visit their homeland/land of their fathers, nor will they.

Would it work better if they hooked it up with Arthur's Day, giving visitors twice the enjoyment?

Still...there might be an upside...if the U.S. can send us coach loads of Irish Americans....I assume we can send back Michael Flatley, no?

Byrne is right.

The whole thing is a gimick to help sell NAMA hotels, by putting more visitors on their books.

Can you imagine how this must appear to a retired US based Irishman who left Ireland in his late teens, with no trade (because the trades were kept in families), no job here(same), bugger all education, and barely enough money to get to London ?

The first thing he does when he gets money is send it home to help pay for his brothers and sisters at home. Then he keeps working and sets up a family.

Meanwhile the gombeens running Ireland continue to treat his brothers and sisters with contempt in case they get interested in dangerous ideas like meritocracy, or accountability. So they end up having to leave as well.

And meanwhile the Fingers and Patrick Nearys of this world take charge of matters in Ireland. The only talent shortage that existed in Ireland was created because the people outside the clique had to bring their talents elsewhere, because the gombeen element was taking control at home.

Then the gombeen "leadership" makes an utter mess of everything. They get Lendahand to strap their mess to the fortunes of those who they were lying to. And then there is a collective beal bocht episode.

The whole things stretches credibility massively.

Along the way the establishment in this country got itself tangled up in a scam called the Euro, which is unravelling.

If Byrne thinks Kenny is a clown, just wait until he hears Noonan.

Noonan brings eijjetry to an entirely different level altogether.

Gabriel Byrne slams The Gathering - The Irish Times - Mon, Nov 05, 2012

The Irish actor Gabriel Byrne has dismissed the Gathering 2013 initiative as "a scam."

Byrne, who previously served as the cultural ambassador for Ireland in the US, said many who left Ireland for the US feel abandoned by the Government - and that the bridge between Ireland and its diaspora is broken.

He also said Irish-Americans are not receptive to being "shaken down" for money.

The Gathering is a tourism initiative to entice people with Irish connections to visit the country during 2013.

Speaking on The Last Word on Today FM today, which was broadcast from New York, Byrne said the Taoiseach’s speech launching The Gathering was "slightly offensive."

"People are sick to death of being asked to help out in what they regard as a scam," he said

"I wish The Gathering the very best of luck but they have to understand that the bridge between the diaspora and the people is broken and I tried to fix that for two years and it’s still broken.... Most people don’t give a ************************ about the diaspora [in Ireland] except to shake them down for a few quid."
