At the moment Galway City, the San Fran of Ireland is in an unusual position, as it is in the 5 seater Galway West Constituency, meaning it includes Connemarra (usually regarded as the most illiberal peole around, who very often wish to keep the national language as therir own secret private patois) and even worse a bit of Kennyland from Mayo! Galway East containing all the big towns, is a 3 seater now having lost a seat and has produced in the past beauts like Keaveny, the only TD yet to represent 2 Troika parties in Dáil Eireann and the only sittin Eff Effer to lose his seat last time out!petuniapetunia Part of Galway is also in with the Rossies.

The proposal is to have Galway City. plus a few thousand to get it over the required population parameter of 90,000, as a 3 seater, with the rest of County Galway being combined to become a 5 seater.

Proposal to turn Galway City into its own constituency | Connacht Tribune - Galway City Tribune

I remember prior to getting 166 mostly numpties up there, Galway and part of Clare were a 4 seater, with a usual 3 seats for Eff Effers!

Submissions have been made...
Wow, since when did submissions to any commission serve as anything more than a PR exercise to make the public think they have an input.

This is the quality of journalism in Ireland that such waffle can be turned in to a story, no wonder we have the spectacular history of corruption and failure that we do when this is our fourth estate.

Hint to any of the cranks on here, if you find the commission's email address....then you too can make a "submission"

You could also assemble 2 4 seaters if you throw in Oranmore and the suburban areas into the City constituency.

Hope theres no gerrymandering going on. All constituencies should have the same number of seats to avoid this.

Will Séarachas O Cweeve be safe ?
Poor "Eoin Coir" is on the sauce again.
When the sauce kicks in, his English language loses out.

Sad but true.

Any old crank can make a submission to an electoral commission, and they're all published. Doesn't make them credible or serious, though.

He wouldn't stand in Galway City would he?

The Shinners would wet themselves with excitement if he did!

Not according to the law, they shouldn't. Unless you want to make all 26 counties the same size and population.

Why would he stand outside his political base?
He wouldn't but the Shinner senator would have a wet dream if he did.

You don't stick to strict county borders anyway.
No9, but you've to stick to them in as much as is possible, it's one of several criteria that need to be balanced. And it's the one that tends to cause the most ire any time it's breached.

I would support that. We are allowing Elizabeth Tudor to influence our electoral systen based on her 1587 county boundaries. Hugh O Neill must be turning in his grave.

Note that NI got rid of county councils in the 1970s or 80s. They have district councils.
