Gangsta Rap/hip hop , censorship and the right wing conservatives

D

Dylan2010

A brand of music that wasnt big in South Dublin in the 80's but we'd get the occasional report on the news of these styles of music being banned or censored at various time and even some cd burnings by nutty religious groups. My only impression was that it its winding up conservatives it cant be all bad. The second song I linked to I believe generated a letter from the FBI to the record company to put them on warning. Other styles of music had their own share of censorship, a country and music song The Pill was banned in the 70's for instance but rap styles stick in my mind as more news worthy
So can any style of music lead to statistically measurable poor behaviour? personally I dont think so any more than heavy metal summoned satan. Was it racially motivated, remember MTV wouldnt even play Michael Jackson at one stage or just "genuine" fear from an older generation that didnt get it, similar to our Seanad has beens and the internet and video games?
Whats your view of the music in cultural terms , an insight into delinquency ? or just another form of entertainment with nothing much to say?

A couple of examples first one love this unoffical video :D of M.O.P Ante up btw yap means hold up at gunpoint , second one N.W.A. F**k the police a nice upbeat little ditty

Lil Fame:

lyrics

Right about now NWA court is in full effect.
Judge Dre presiding in the case of NWA versus the police department.
Prosecuting attourneys are MC Ren Ice Cube and Eazy muthafu*kin E.
Order order order. Ice Cube take the muthafu*kin stand.
Do you swear to tell the truth the whole truth
and nothin but the truth so help your black ass?

Why don't you tell everybody what the ************************ you gotta say?

Fu*k tha police
Comin straight from the underground
Young nigga got it bad cuz I'm brown
And not the other color so police think
They have the authority to kill a minority

Fu*k that ************************, cuz I ain't tha one
For a punk mutha************************a with a badge and a gun
To be beatin on, and throwin in jail
We could go toe to toe in the middle of a cell

Fu*kin with me cuz I'm a teenager
With a little bit of gold and a pager
Searchin my car, lookin for the product
Thinkin every nigga is sellin narcotics

You'd rather see me in the pen
Then me and Lorenzo rollin in the Benzo
Beat tha police outta shape
And when I'm finished, bring the yellow tape
To tape off the scene of the slaughter
Still can't swallow bread and water

I don't know if they fags or what
Search a nigga down and grabbin his nuts
And on the other hand, without a gun they can't get none
But don't let it be a black and a white one
Cuz they slam ya down to the street top
Black police showin out for the white cop

Ice Cube will swarm
On any muthafu*ka in a blue uniform
Just cuz I'm from the CPT, punk police are afraid of me
A young nigga on a warpath
And when I'm finished, it's gonna be a bloodbath
Of cops, dyin in LA
Yo Dre, I got somethin to say

Fu*k the police (4X)

Rap is NOT music

Maybe it should not be banned

- but it should not be listened to either....:p

PS Anyone in Merrion Square today?

- where REAL music was being played:cool:

As above rap is NOT music. Only relevant to a tiny underclass who seem to think it is.

Give over. This has been said about almost every new type/genre of popular/youth-focused music since popular/youth-focused music has been around. Blues, Jazz, Skiffle, rock n'roll, punk, reggae etc.

If a new type of music arises which is popular with the youth of the day, and this New Music is not consudered to be subversive and degenerate by the fogeys if the time, then we should be worried. Give me angry Rap over sanitised sickly-sweet Pop any day.

If it sounds harmless on the first listen, it's probably a waste of time. If it sounds like noise, that should ****************************** your interest. It mightn't be good, but at least it's challenging. Which should be the point of anything new.

Popular music genres are about expressing rebellion. You can't express rebellion without actively getting up people's noses. Name one good band or musician who didn't.

EDIT: funny how the filter won't let me use the innocuous phrase " pr1ck your interest".

What do people consider right wing cunts? Serious question. :)

Blues, Jazz, Skiffle, rock n'roll, punk, reggae etc. are all forms of music

They all involve people perceptibly singing and/or playing a recognized musical instrument

Rap is not music - unlike Blues, Jazz, Skiffle, rock n'roll, punk, reggae etc.

Rap is Pop music. Or rather Hip Hop is Pop. Rock is dead, so is R&B, soul, punk et al. All that's left that's worth listening to now is Hip Hop and Country, ha.

It's not tiny either, I think it's about 17% of sales, though I can't swear to that figure.

It's very commercial now and maybe quite distant from its roots in some respects though much of it is still authentic. It's international now, off the top of my head I think there's even an Israeli Zionist rapper who makes the charts in Israel. The Koreans are heavily into their new forms of hip hop too.

Ain't it racist? They use the "N" word?

Oh of course it's not racist. It's mostly black people who rap and we all know its only whitey who is racist.

Well, anyone who's insecure enough to consider banning certain types of music, video games etc but can't be bothered putting money into education. People who look after their developer/banker friends while graduates haemorrhage out of the country.
Also anyone who gets their ideas from a book cobbled together from the collected ramblings of Middle Eastern goat herders that died thousands of years ago.

If you were in Merrion Sq yesterday afternoon with thousands of people enjoying the Soul Music then you would not write such a thing!

BTW 90% were people under 30 as best I could judge
