Gerry Adams interviewed by Chris Donoghue on Newstalk

Unusual interview in that the interviewer got the hump. Started out fairly innocuously about Sinn Fein's possible Coalition options but then Donoghue started off on Adams's apology in the Dail about Jerry McCabe. The temperature rose when Donoghue started going on about what other apologies would be made, why was Adams making an apology when he said he was never in the IRA etc. etc. Adams replied that he thought the interview was about Sinn Fein's coalition strategy and then took to reciting his own soundbites over Donoghue's interjections which sounded as if he was seriously dissing Donoghue's estimation of Donoghue.

Eventually, the stalemate was broken when Donoghue asked if Adams tweeted in the bath. Adams replied that he did and, when Donoghue expressed disbelief, he then told him that his interviewing skills might improve if he did the same.

As the interview had been recorded half an hour earlier, Donoghue followed it up with a very precious-sounding whine to his co-presenter about the lack of respect Adams had shown him.

Jeez, if anyone complains about the lack of depth to comment on this site, they can point to the example shown by broadcasters given a national stage for their self-importance.

Gas.... must listen to it on the player.

Newstalk are looking for a Jobbridge journalist.... maybe they are thinking of replacing him :)

Classic Adams.

Q: "Do you have more to apologise for?"

GA: "I may have; I don't know..."

Hilarious.

Really aggressive, predictable and boring interview. It is a sad sign of our media that they cannot concentrate on tackling Sinn Feins current policies.

I like Donoghue but he seriously got this one wrong. Sounded like he was told to go after Adams and his alleged membership - old hat now.

Donoghue plays the angry man a little much.

He seems outraged by almost everything. Thought both himself
and Adams were a bit snippy but Donoghue running to mummy to
complain about it was very funny.

How dare a jumped up politician like Gerry Adams cast aspersions on the professional of such an internationally recognised journalist as Chris Donoghue
Disgraceful!

Old hat? Did you actually listen to the interview?! Adams is talking about all that touch feely healing that is needed coming out of conflict blah blah blah, and how leadership carries with it responsibilities blah blah blah.

Right, Gerry; how about you be a real leader, and take responsibility for your own past-no on else's- by way of starting the healing process!

He can't even admit he was in the f*cking IRA, but he expects people to take his desire for "healing" seriously.

And he's such a sleazebag he keeps coming out with this nod and wink "I never distance myself...".

Sounds interesting.

Was that today and what time etc? Want to listen to it on the interweb later.

Mr. Donoghue strikes me as yet another Paxman wannabe (yawn!!) who seriously overrates his own interviewing skills.

Mr. Adams should have taken a leaf out of Lloyd Bentsen's book and told him: "Chris, you're no Paxman!"

p.s.

Besides lost car keys and rubber ducks in the bath, Gerry also tweets about being in bed with Ted (his favourite teddy bear), and Ted's same-sex relationship with Tom (which Gerry says is their business, and theirs alone).

Gerry just tweeted that Ted is furious with Chris! petunia

Gas....

Do Newstalk generally edit interviews as quick as that ? Anytime I've listened back to them it's the full playback of the player....
Dunno. I haven't been on that site in a while. I was surprised to see the interview up so quick myself...and in such handy segments!
