It is rumoured that Gerry Adams's presidential address to the Sinn Féin Ard Fheis tonight may contain his decision to step down as president of the party. The implications for the future of the party which he has transformed, and for politics in the country cannot be underestimated. A new leader could put Sinn Féin as the unequivocal leader of all left and progressive forces in the country and stand as a rallying point for all who want to change from the self-serving, greedy toadies of European imperialism.

The presidential address by Gerry Adams is live on RTE at 8.30pm. Hopefully it will be followed by discussion on the issues affecting the country, both in SF and among those who are on a similar path. Politics.ie can play a part providing a platform, free from mainstream control where issues can be debated.

I wasn't born when the Treaty was signed in 1921 so my views on Irish sovereignty are also irrelevant.

Hopefully if he does resign this is will see the dying away of all discussion of Sinn Fein policy dogged by references to the Troubles.
