Louth apparently.

A massive gamble which could spell the end for Gerry if it backfires (and I believe there's a good chance it will)

Is his career not finished since the scandal with his brother?

He'll win. Sinn Fein will make huge gains in the next election. It will be seen and used as a protest vote by those thousands of people pissed off with the FF/Gormless. But also with FG and Labour. I could never even contemplate voting for SF but not this time (and many others feel the same). If SF run enough candidates in Dublin they could make huge gains.

So much for the double jobbing they talk about up north, Gerry will be triple jobbing.

Interesting. I believe that he would then have to give up his Westminster seat (and perhaps his Stormont seat), if elected. Shows the desperation in SF on holding their Louth sat.
That is risible analysis. Morgan would easily have held the seat.

Surprising development. Could they not of held off the announcement until after the by election....

KeithM: SF would have no problem holding onto Louth if they ran Sharkey. Just look at the local election results.

This could backfire horribly.

Completely agree - SF are in meltdown and this smacks of desperation. Let's not forget that Adams is in his 60s.

SF are far from meltdown in Louth. After Cavan Monaghan it's the second safest seat for SF.

It is an odd decision to run there. I cant see the reasoning for it.

If true, it can only be because Gerry wants to enter the Dáil. Where else would he plausibly run?

How the hell is Sharkey a liability? Labour are nowhere in Dundalk and given FG's popularity I cant see them getting a second seat. They made a huge deal about McGuinness the last time and she failed.

Get over your own anti-SF bias. I remember you defending W'OD to the death after those brothel comments came out.

I don't dispute that Morgan would most likely have held the seat. However it was far from certain they would retain it without him, especially if they were stupid eniough to run Sharkey who comes from the overly-congested Dundalk end of the constituency.

Sharkey is a liability and with Labour getting a national boost and perhaps FG running MMcG again, there is certainly no guaranteed SF seat.
Nonsense once again. Louth is getting an extra seat.
