Apparently at the recent Labour party national executive meeting Eamon Gilmore announced that every public rep should be spending at least 2 hours a week on constituency work!!

What else would they be doing? Catch up at the back guys!

And does anyone else find it highly ironic that the operation he wants base the party on is the Taoiseach's own constituency organisation in St Lukes?!

I heard Ned O'Keeffe on the radio this morning saying that all he did up until January 15th was go to the races in Leopardstown and Limerick, but then the weather broke, so he went back to do a bit of constituency work.

He also said each Deputy should bring forward ONE policy proposal each Dáil session. Now that still leaves a lot of time to do something back in the constituency.

I'm just shocked that they needed to be told this kind of stuff.

Its no wonder Lab are in the their present position . I would imagine Lab rep should have been doing this 2 hours all along.

We FFers have 2 hours knocking on doors before lunch every day.
Send some of 'em down to Ennis then. Haven't seen one since the last election.

Calm down we are debating.
I'm just helping the thread along to where it is going to end up.

Indeed but it seems these guys are so busy deciding whether to be social democrats or democratic socialists that they can't squeeze two hours a week to be active on the ground and their leader has to remind them.

Yeah Labour do have a lot of problems. I think Gilmore himself made the same point that he shouldn't have to say these things, but he does.

Although at the same time, since the election I haven't been canvassed once and only FG have dropped something in my door.

Firstly, and most importantly, this thread does not even remotely reflect what Eamon actually said tot he National Executive - just because Harry McGee chose to run a story that contained two lines of a 4/5 page document, doesn't mean that there was nothing else in the document. There were a huge number of other proposals, guidelines and suggestions contained in the document.

Secondly, the line (if you particularly want to have a thread about one line of a document) was in relation to aspiring LE candidates, and not established Labour Party public reps.

Thirdly, are we likely to see a significant piece of legislation/policy published by all FF TDs during each Dáil term? Are we ****.

I have to admit- even though I hate them- the only politicians who ever come to my door are FFers - i'll have the shotgun ready next time though!

Sinn Féin have come to my door a good bit, as have the Green Party. I would imagine both have come more than Fianna Fáil.
