Looks like Google is facing a fine of approximately 3 billion Euros for abuse of its market position in search and promotion of its own properties over competitors.

Google faces record-breaking fine for web search monopoly abuse

This may not be the end of its troubles as Google has also been charged with abuse of its position over the Android operating system that runs on many mobile phones. In the US, the Federal Trade Commission is considering reopening an investigation in to Google's search engine results and possible abuses there. Anyone care to guess what effect this will have on Google's Dublin operation?

It won't have any effect on them at all due to the 'Double Irish Dutch Sandwich' (Look it up) at least until 2020

The EU is a monopoly on policy formulation. And it is undemocratic.

The irony of the nEU empire suing Google, in the context described, is indicative of how far ut has wandered up it's own self importance.

Google should respond by taking the p1ss out of the Brussels nonsense factory.

It is a huge tax-dodger too. And it shares your data with the US NSA.

LOL, you have not one clue how much google knows about you - because of its dominant market position. You use it trustingly and give your whole shop away to them.

Sure, google is grand.

I know well about Google and loads of other internet search engines and social media site and what they do and how they use information so don't be so cocksure about what people know and don't know.

No you dont. You have just demonstrated that :)

This is what google is preventing, oh capitalist serenader

  • qual search and display criteria for all websites, including Google's own services;
  • no use of content from press publishers (newspaper, magazine and online publishers) beyond what is truly indispensable for navigation purposes in the horizontal search without prior consent;
  • an option to mark information on an item-by-item-basis in a machine-readable way in order to express permissions and restrictions for use of that respective content;
  • no direct or indirect punishment of websites that restrict the use of their content; and
  • no preferential treatment of news aggregators towards online press portals.

Simples :)

I can think of a disinformation oligopoly that operates in Ireland that never gets any trouble from regulatory authorities.

Google need to appoint former politicians to the payroll, so as to get a free pass.

The Commission alleges that Google has breached EU antitrust rules by:
  • requiring manufacturers to pre-install Google Search and Google's Chrome browser and requiring them to set Google Search as default search service on their devices, as a condition to license certain Google proprietary apps;
  • preventing manufacturers from selling smart mobile devices running on competing operating systems based on the Android open source code;
  • giving financial incentives to manufacturers and mobile network operators on condition that they exclusively pre-install Google Search on their devices.
The Commission believes that these business practices may lead to a further consolidation of the dominant position of Google Search in general internet search services. It is also concerned that these practices affect the ability of competing mobile browsers to compete with Google Chrome, and that they hinder the development of operating systems based on the Android open source code and the opportunities they would offer for the development of new apps and services.
In the Commission's preliminary view, this conduct ultimately harms consumers because they are not given as wide a choice as possible and because it stifles innovation.

C'mon capitalist - tell me why the thoroughly pro-capitalist EU Commission is WRONG. :)

Or are you a little Paddy capitalist? Its a big business - it must be RIGHT.
