In an opinion piece for Time magazine, 85-year-old Gorbachev wrote, "More troops, tanks and armored personnel carriers are being brought to Europe. NATO and Russian forces and weapons that used to be deployed at a distance are now placed closer to each other, as if to shoot point-blank.

"Politicians and military leaders sound increasingly belligerent and defense doctrines more dangerous. Commentators and TV personalities are joining the bellicose chorus. It all looks as if the world is preparing for war.

"While state budgets are struggling to fund people's essential social needs, military spending is growing. Money is easily found for sophisticated weapons whose destructive power is comparable to that of the weapons of mass destruction; for submarines whose single salvo is capable of devastating half a continent; for missile defense systems that undermine strategic stability.

"No problem is more urgent today than the militarization of politics and the new arms race,” he continued. “Stopping and reversing this ruinous race must be our top priority."

Do you agree with him? Do you think he's over reacting? Should we be stocking up on the non perishable foods?

Anybody with a bit of sense and the assets to do so has already started "prepping". Putting money into gold maple leaves is also a good idea in case of paper money becoming worthless. Given the world we live in that insane and evil gun laws in the Republic of Ireland are becoming more insane and evil by the day.

The Russian state media was hysterical since Ukraine flared up. State TV had programmes where Eastern Ukraine was presented as rightfully Russian.

Even Finland is being demonised. A fake news story claiming Russians were being persecuted recently appeared (in connection with a child taken into care I think). There is a method to this madness, most likely a warning to Finland not to join NATO.

Then there are the alleged Russian submarine incursions into Swedish waters, and violations of Gotland's airspace. Gotland was heavily fortified during the Cold War but not now. Russian state owned Gazprom has been trying to lease a port on the island, which the Swedish govt is trying to get the local govt to stop.

The most hate man in Russian history.

Spend some time talking to some Russians. He hadn't a clue how to run Russia and was a disaster very much like our very own disaster the 'intellectual' Garret the 'Good'.

The biggest conflict of the last 80 years was founded on a pact of peace.

"Of all the enemies to public liberty war is, perhaps, the most to be dreaded because it comprises and develops the germ of every other. War is the parent of armies; from these proceed debts and taxes … known instruments for bringing the many under the domination of the few.… No nation could preserve its freedom in the midst of continual warfare."

James Madison, Political Observations, 1795

The world has never stopped preparing for war. Four years back we were spending $1.7000,000,000,000 - that's 1.7 trillion dollars on defense. Defense against what or whom isn't clear because people in the West have never felt more vulnerable and it's primarily down to the fear of terrorist attacks, attacks that can be carried with weapons worth a couple of hundred dollars or as little as ten dollars for a suicide bombing.

The doomsday clock moved to 2.5 minutes to midnight (armageddon) when Trump took office, a telling indicator of the kind of confidence he inspires.

PS. Yes, Gorbachov is correct.

But Gorvy now has been banging the tin pot since Russia annexed Crimea and invaded Georgia.

In case of a break down of the State whether complete or partial from various causes law abiding citizens should have the ability to defend themselves, their families and their property. We are not in Kansas anymore Dotty.

The sub prime debt bomb created the conditions wherein war is one option of preserving the existing power distribution.

Various bailouts ensured that in the end they would all want war rather than explain that democracy was bought and sold a long time ago.

The rich in the West want war. Therefore an enemy is required.

She failed the psychological evaluation on her gun license application?
No private citizen can legally obtain semi not mind fully automatic weapon in the ROI. However good a shot you are and I'm a pretty excellent one if I say so myself going up with the junk you can get legally with extreme difficulty here against proper guns is problematic.

Access to water is also something people need to think seriously about in a survival situation. Even if you are not that well off people can pool together with friends, families or neighbours to do some basic prepping.

LOL no I'm and of course NOT! However in the case of a major war we could well see the partial breakdown of the State. It is better to be safe than sorry. If Hilary had won the election though I would have gone into full survivalist mode.
