In a savage attack, Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny said he had lost all trust in Taoiseach Brian Cowen and his ability to reveal the true extent of the problem facing the country.

The Opposition leader ratcheted up pressure on Mr Cowen by demanding the Exchequer figures are independently checked ahead of the Budget.
Not only was the economy being destroyed, but the Government were “wilfully concealing the truth of the extent of that destruction from the Irish people in what amounts to a national catastrophe,” Mr Kenny said.
In the Dáil the Taoiseach defended the Government’s handling of the economy, claiming its actions had stabilised the public finances..

I think an independent investigation of the country's finances should take place prior to any agreement by the opposition on a budget. Question remains, is the government releasing all the information they have or only bits of it?

The government never covered anything up. The cost of the cuts/bailouts only gets added when another of their mates turns up and says he needs a 2 billion euro digout for a couple of flats in Limerick.

and on the same day the EU said that laws might be needed to ensure that statistics are correct

The best way to ensure European statistics are robust is to enshrine a minimum set of standards in law, European Central Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet said on Tuesday.

"There should be mechanisms to ensure that governance and quality provisions laid down in the European statistics code of practice of the ESS (European Statistical System) are fully adhered to," Trichet said at an ECB statistics conference.

"This is best achieved by reinforcing the binding nature of the European statistics Code of Practice and enshrining its minimum standards, in particular on professional independence, in a European legal act."

Paul Gogarty on RTE radio tonight agreed that the government is withholding information. Equally he said that it was good that the opposition gave the bad news because the public need to be badly scared!!

He and the rest of this government are, by his admission, guilty of lying and deception.

It was a truly astonishing speech by Kenny. On the day after his finance spokesman and 3 others were shown the books he calls for somebody "Competent and independent" to examine them. It's some slap in the face for Noonan.

Yes I am
This is a joke.

The main opposition and the Government are doing eachother favours all over the place with the state of the economy. Any sort of leadership by the two main parties would have secured an election along time ago (SF are trying something more than just call for it at least).

It really is a case that Ireland is leaderless and the future is hopeless. This biggest loss of people since the potato blight has seen Irelands entire middle class disappear overnight and we are left with a ruling class and a tax payer.

Fair play to Kenny today,he really succeeded in showing Lenihan up for what he is. .A nice man, good media performer and every bit as useless as Cowen in doing his job, Lenihans predictions were all wrong as reported on Prime Time tonight, Those who have been in charge, Bertie, Harney, McCreevy, Cowen, Lenihan, have brought the country and its people to its knees, However the end is near at the moment it looks as if they will be consigned to the dustbin of history by Christmas.

I suppose you could twist it to appear as that, but what i'd take from it is that he's calling for someone "Competent and independent" based on the evidence noonan has presented himw with.

Bring them in. Leaks like this are part and parcel of softening up the public. Enda is just following orders. The rest of us see it as an inevitability and a welcome one at that
