Brian Cowen has been quoted on Newstalk as saying:

"as a country we must tighten our belts and look at all areas, they are no sacred cows. Our choices were tough, but in picking between saving lives with health, or saving Galetacht Industry jobs the answer was clear. Irishness is a state of mind, and our new friends in Bangalore will preserve the Irish language culture until our country is whole again. And then from its new global base the Galetacht culture will arise again when the time is right"

Brian Lenihan has announced further details today:
As you know the country faces a grave fiscal crisis, the pace of adjustment will have to be faster than planned. Given this year’s flooding we have decided to close the Galway Gaeltacht by Q2 2010. Residents will be offered attractive relocation packages to Bangalore and if they choose to stay in Ireland we shall do what we can to find them new employment.
IBEC have welcomed this announcement :
For too long the Irish language industry has been creating workfare jobs for the boys. Getting these jobs was always down to who you knew and the Gaeltachts have had marginal impacts on tourism. It is time for these expensive theme parks to be shut. We also welcome the minister’s innovative plan to preserve our heritage by exploring low cost , off-shore models in Bangalore.

Mods who have the power to place threads in the Zoo cannot themselves put there own threads there (or have them moved there by others). That would upset the 'democratic' image of P.ie. ;)

Yes, a chara, I've noticed that. It's lucky for Cyberianpan that he is an admin, or nearly all of his threads would be in the Zoo.
