Grave of Eamon De Valera vandalised in Glasnevin Cemetery

An investigation is under way after criminal damage was caused to the grave of former president and taoiseach Eamon de Valera.

A man in his 50s was arrested at around 3.30pm and taken to Mountjoy Garda Station for questioning.

He is due to appear in court tomorrow morning.

What kind of a Country have we become when the teaching of History has produced some minds like the idiot who did this?:?

Will take a walk there tomorrow for a look.

Scumbag.

Loathe him or love him, he was an instrumental figure in our history.

A vile act. Perhaps it's just because of media coverage but this grave vandalising business seems to be happening more often.

The man had many flaws but was a monumental politician in his time. Unfortunately the cartoonish "Devil Eire" rigid Catholic backwoodsman figure has become almost the norm nowadays; indeed it says a lot about how simplistic political discourse has become nowadays.

Mental health problems obviously. Which means all outrage is misdirected and pointless.

I'm waiting for the 'hilarious' posts to start on here, regardless.

Even if they are also resulting from alcohol and tranquilisers.

What has the teaching of history got to do with a man who clearly has his own issues?

The vilification of Eamon de Valera - a man dead these 40 years

A man in his 50s would not even remember him

So obviously he has had his mind warped by what he has read or seen online or on TV

- from people who wish to vilify him

-see RTE's Rebellion for a recent stab at portraying Dev as a devious coward...

Much as I blame the Chief of the Chippewa for a lot of things, grave desecration is disgusting.
