Post details here of any great films, which might not have received the attention they deserved or are forgoitten
Including foreign films which can often be better than Hollywood films
Political or history based films are especially welcome given the nature of this site
I will post a few to get it going and more later
Include an IMDB link if you can

City of War: The Story of John Rabe
Incredible story of John Rabe, the German MD of Siemens Nanjing and Nazi Party member (although not a Nazi), who saved an estimated 200,000 lives inside the Siemens Nanjing complex during the Japanese invasion of China 1937/38

Land and Freedom
A Ken Loach film about an English socialist who volunteered to fight in the Spanish civil war. Depicts well the socialist idealism of the day that drove them to fight in Spain and ultimately lose their lives.

Black Book
Dutch film set in Nazi occupied Holland where a Jewish singer and resistance member infiltrates the local Gestapo.
Perhaps the best Dutch film ever to come out

One film I missed which I regret not seeing later was 1997s "Life is beautiful", directed by and starring Roberto Benigni as an Italian Jew who owns a book shop, and who employs his fertile imagination to shield his son from the horrors of internment in a concentration camp.

La vita è bella (1997) - IMDb

I thought Land and Freedom was an appalling film. The idealization of the anarchists and trotskyists is nauseating and the stiltedness of the late 20th Century language and attitudes in Loach's dreadful habit of letting actors ad lib for entire conversations has always got my goat.

John Rabe was brilliant, and told a story that needed telling, and the photography was brilliant.

I don't know the other one.

Black Book is excellent.

Soldier of Orange (1976) Another Verhoeven effort.

I mentioned it on the other thread: Friedkin's nihilistic classic Sorcerer (1977)

"Joint Security Area" - Korea
Gongdong gyeongbi guyeok JSA (2000) - IMDb

"In the DMZ separating North and South Korea, two North Korean soldiers have been killed, supposedly by one South Korean soldier. But the 11 bullets found in the bodies, together with the 5 remaining rounds in the assassin's magazine, amount to 16 cartridges for a gun that should normally hold 15. The investigating Swiss/Swedish team from the neutral countries overseeing the DMZ suspects that another, unknown party was involved - all of which points to some sort of cover up. The truth is much simpler and much more tragic."

Excellent movie.
Quentin Tarantino lists it in his Top 20 movies post-1992 (but it's not a Tarantino ketchup-all-over-the-place type movie at all - far from it).

Werner Herzog's “Aguirre, the Wrath of God” (1973) is one of the great haunting visions of the cinema. It tells the story of the doomed expedition of the conquistador Gonzalo Pizarro, who in 1560 and 1561 led a body of men into the Peruvian rain forest, lured by stories of the lost city.

Wake in Fright (1971) - IMDb

Superb (bit very strange) Aussie movie.

Peeping Tom (1960) - IMDb

Michael Powell's experimental movie. Quite tame by today's standards (and some of the acting is wooden). Like all of his movies, the photography is exquisite.

Kings Row (1942) - IMDb

Unusual pre-cursor to the David Lynch small town with a weird underbelly of the 80s.
Ronald Reagan's best movie role (and he is excellent in it).

Jubilee (1978) - IMDb

A crude effort from Derek Jarman, but rather prophetic I fear.

Sir Henry at Rawlinson End.

The wonderful and surreal ramblings of Vivian Stanshall put to film.

Any fan of Viv's is a friend of mine!

I spent much of the summer trying to put some order on a huge batch of his radio broadcasts that a devoted Viv fan in the UK sent me. Scattered among them was a complete run of the Rawlinson End episodes from the John Peel show in excellent sound quality - I already had a set, but some of the episodes had less than ideal sound.

Sir Henry on hang-gliding - "Seems a novel enough way to commit suicide. Pass me m' pistol. See if I can't bring the blighter down in the lake."

Great soundtrack too.
