On the face of it Trump’s musing about buying Greenland seem as ridiculous as it is high handed; 19th century American colonialism in our time. The notion has been dismissed and ridiculed by many politicians in both Greenland and Denmark. Former Danish Prime Minister, Lars Lokke Rasmussen commented that ....

"It must be an April Fool's Day joke...but totally out of season!

Greenland’s Premier Kim Kielsen’s statement reiterated a similar statement by Greenland’s foreign ministry....."Greenland is not for sale, but Greenland is open for trade and cooperation with other countries, including the USA.”

A strong declaration of their independent stance.....but Greenland is a vast territory with a very small population of 50,000, 40% of workers are employed by the state which receives approx 35% of its income by way of subsidy from Denmark.

Greenland is facing major changes, presenting it with various opportunities and threats, over the coming century. Climate change is already starting to cause notable changes in the landscape. The retreat of the ice cap will open up the territory for large scale development. China is showing considerable interest in investing in infrastructure and mining in Greenland.....particularly in relation to prospecting for rare earth metals which if successful would further consolidate its dominance over the supply of those materials. Big powers are taking a serious interest in this very weak territory. How should the Greenlanders and the Danes respond?

'We’re not for sale,' Greenland tells Trump

Could Greenland become China's Arctic base?

Greenland Minerals Ltd....

Greenland Minerals is an Australian company that has been operating in Greenland since 2007.

The Company’s primary focus is the development of the Kvanefjeld rare earth project in south west Greenland.

Greenland Minerals' Kvanefjeld Project is positioned to be a future cornerstone to global rare earth supply. When developed Kvanefjeld will be a large-scale, low-cost, long term supplier of products which are at the centre of the unfolding revolution in the efficient use of energy.
HOME

The largest shareholder in Greenland Minerals is the Chinese company China's Shenghe Resources Holding Co Ltd.

Only a massive buffoon could make such an unbelievable proposition.
Obviously the Greenlanders and the Danes are privately laughing their asses off at the idea.
:ROFLMAO: It is the one thing Trump is good at - he has been such a source of belly laughs for the last two years and eight months.

It’s not a new idea. It’s been mooted several times before. Truman offered the Danes $100 million in exchange for it in 1946.

The US does have an Air Force base there in Thule, the northwest part of the island. It is a semi autonomous region in Denmark with it's own parliament, even though the send members to the Danish parliament in Copenhagen. They have a lot of jurisdiction over local things like taxes, justice etc but Denmark maintains primacy on foreign and defence issues and hence the AFB there.

It was one of a few territories to secede from the EU, doing so in the 80s (what was then the EEC) after a referendum there, although still subject to many EU regulations as a result of the fact that it's still Danish.

I highly doubt the Greenlanders would change their current status, even if given a choice.

So, Trump cannot cut the deal.

Oh well. No surprises there, then.

Wrong.
The point Trump is making is that global warmists only seem capable of seeing the negatives, they never present an upside to climate change (if it exists). What Trump is telling the world is that Greenland with an ice sheet is useless, but that as the sheet melts you'll have fertile land one tenth the size of Africa freed up to farm, helping lower food costs in USA and Europe. All good, but not for the warmists who only want to spread their creed of doom

What Trump is telling the world is that Greenland with an ice sheet is fairly useless, but that as soon as the sheet melts you'll have fertile land one tenth the size of Africa freed up to farm, helping lower food costs in USA and Europe. There is an upside to climate change and Trump is here to make us all feel good. We can all go to Greenland.

Or he can develop a golf course there.

They have been trying to buy it for 150 years

There is nothing remotely 'ridiculous' about this bid

Greenland is vast pristine and basically uninhabited

- and full of vast reserves of raw materials

It is also of huge strategic importance to the USA - they have had a military base there for almost 70 years.

With Cold War II now in full swing

- this is Ice Cold calculation by President Trump.😎

What? The Danes will agree?

This is just another drama queen piece of nonsense from Trump, that all the littlealt right lickers admire.

It was exciting in 2016, since then we have all got older.

Probably a better idea that relying on their military to achieve anything, humiliated everywhere they try to use muscle, now begging the Taliban for a deal so they can extricated themselves from that mess, Iraq another disaster increased Iran's area of influence, Syria handed to the Russians, trying to buy land will be cheaper in lives and dollars and has a better chance of success.

nah - Trump is not "telling the world" what you claim he's "telling the world".
what Trump & indeed AGW Deniers like yourself have been telling the world is that AGW is a hoax, invented by the Chinese.

Manifest Destiny lives. Basically, the people of Greenland don’t matter.

There has been no president in living memory so incapable of asking for, and listening to, expert advice before shooting his mouth off.

Bush and Obama suckered USA into those wars - not Donald Trump.

Well if he cant get a Big Island in the Atlantic into his pocket

- maybe he could try something smaller?

Any suggestions?
