Keane: Cost of Pat Hickey departure more than €1.5m

"At this stage the costs are between €1.5m and €2m. They have certainly wiped out most of the reserves of the Irish Olympic Federation," Keane told RTÉ’s Saturday Sport.

"We obviously did regain a certain amount from our insurers but only maybe five or six hundred thousand euro of that".

So much for Pat's promise that the insurance policy in place would cover all costs, Keane should take legal action against him to recover same.

"One of the things we discovered was the average number of staff on an Olympic Committee across Europe is 14 and our Irish Olympic committee had four".

A good clue there as to how Pat was able to control the IOC and cut deals with THG and all the time coaching Del Boy to not only take over but also to cover his tracks.

No news lately of the Brazilians bring Pat back to Rio to face charges, maybe they have accepted the bail money of the Azeris and called it a day.

And a nice soft report from RTÉ - they wouldn’t think of raising the pertinent questions.

Hickey is an insider and his detainment in Rio embarrassed everyone, the Govt would much rather someone outside of the State solve this problem as they know Hickey has been stroking for years.

Nobody knows where Hickey is, he does not care how much it costs IOC in legal costs and his Azeri mates said goodbye to their bail monies the day they put them out.

Shane Ross not interested as he has to deal with Hickey's protege, Del Boy.

Maybe they should have negotiated a better deal for legal fees. Obviously, these wealthy European gringos are regarded as a soft touch in Brazil, which may be why they have spent close to half a million. But, it sounds like a corrupt, politically driven legal system. I don't see any alternative but for organisations like the OCI to legally support their staff who get caught up in cases like this. Selling tickets isn't a crime in most countries.

What has happened with this case? It sounds like the initial publicity surrounding the "sting" catching Hickey bollock naked in his hotel room, with the media standing outside, was all they were really after. It obviously went down well in Brazil, that here was a top IOC official accused of ticket touting when the Olympics were seen locally as a waste of money. But, the fact the case has gone nowhere (3 years later) says it all.

"Getting this appointment right, and beyond reproach, was crucial," said Ms Keane, who revealed Mr Hickey has had no involvement with the OFI. "He is currently self-suspended from the [Olympic] movement. The protocol is that he is not involved and he is not invited to anything and he hasn't looked to interfere or do anything around the work we are doing."

No sign of any legal action against Hickey for recovery of funds, no indications of what he scammed in all the years prior to Rio and his ticket deals or indeed his present location.

There was an insurance policy in place to cover legal fees of OCI but no report on how much it actually contributed to Hickey's bill of almost 2m.

Looks like the Azeri bail money .5m US$ has been forfeited.

What a lovely family
The most up to date position re the criminal case against Pat Hickey seems to be this - Irish Times article of 29 March 2019

The subheading is:
The OFI has not received any indication when or if the trial, suspended in 2017, will resume

"The trial in Brazil of Hickey on ticket touting charges was suspended in November 2017, ensuring he was not required to return to Rio from Ireland for the trial date of November 29th, as was originally scheduled. The supreme court in Brasília explained that an injunction to suspend the case, granted to THG executive Kevin Mallon, “extends to all of the accused in this process”

"The other accused were Mr Hickey and Barbara Carnieri, who was arrested alongside Mr Mallon in a hotel in Rio on the eve of the 2016 Olympic Games.

Both men faced charges of alleged ticket touting, tax evasion and money laundering. They denied any wrongdoing, with Hickey repeatedly claiming he would be “cleared of all charges”.

The article concludes with a statement that the Olympic Federation of Ireland has not received any indication when or if the suspended trial will resume and have not had any contact with officials in Brazil!

So the entire "scandal" was a farce but instead of denouncing the Brazilian authorities, the Irish prefer to sneer at Pat Hickey!

It does look like bail monies for people mentioned have been forfeited and the Brazilian Authorities are not pursuing.

Hickey however has cost the OCI/OFI a lot of money so far and the insurance policy that Hickey had in place for legal costs etc., is not covering the bills being run up due solely to him.
