Now that Eircom is looking to get rid of 1/3 of its workforce, and going possibly for compulsory redundancies, those with long memories will be wondering where is Con Scanlon?

Remember those long fulsome tributes to the modern pragmatic trade union prince in the national press? Words like genius were thrown around like confetti. Remember the €1M deal he swung for himself when eircom changed hands? Remember the business pages lauding his getting 1/3 of eircom for the employees of the ESOP fund?

Why aren't his groupies in the business pages looking for his thoughts on the examinership of eircom and the chopping of employee's pension entitlements, him being such a business genius and all?

But maybe the normal ethics of newspaper journalism do not apply to the business pages. Maybe, whisper it, when trade union leaders are lauded in those pages, it is not for working in the interests of their members, but for the very opposite! Nah, that could never happen. That would be unethical.

Good ole Con did very well for himself out of that deal. IIRC he trousered €1000000 out of that deal. I'm sure he's enjoying it somewhere. He was appropriately named.

So the answer is that no-one has seen him. You'd think those same business journalists who queued up to canonise him would now seek out his wise words on the eircom pension disaster, the examinership and now the demand to be rid of 1 in 3 of its workforce.

The only good thing is that maybe, maybe some people will knoiw in future, that the moment the press praises a trade union figure, he should immediately be sacked by the membership.
