BBC News - US reporter Helen Thomas quits over Israel comments

Thomas has been a reporter for 67 years and has worked as a reporter in the White House since the days of Eisenhower.

From Wikipedia:

On May 27, 2010, outside a White House Jewish heritage event, Rabbi David Nesenoff asked if Thomas had any comments on Israel. Thomas replied, "Tell them to get the hell out of Palestine,"[10] and added that the people are under occupation. Asked where they should go she replied that "they should go home" to Poland, Germany, America and "everywhere else".[11][12] Thomas subsequently issued an apology on her personal web site.[12][13][14] On June 6, Thomas's agency, Nine Speakers, Inc., announced that they had dropped her as a client, due to her remarks.[15][16] Craig Crawford, who co-authored "Listen up, Mr. President", said that he "will no longer be working with Helen on our book projects".[17] Other fallout from Thomas' statements include a rebuke from the White House[18] and cancellation of a commencement speech she was to give at Walt Whitman High School in Bethesda, Maryland.[19] On June 7, 2010, Thomas tendered her immediate resignation from Hearst Newspapers and entered into retirement.[20]

So much for freedom of speech....eh!!!!!

A high school graduation speech by veteran White House reporter Helen Thomas has been canceled because of controversial remarks she made about Israel, the school's principal said in an e-mail Sunday.

Jaysus, so much for free speech...

I'd agree with what she said, albeit I might have put it a tad more diplomatically...

What would Whitman make of it?

All faults may be forgiven of him who has perfect candor.

It seems she did in fact exercise her freedom of speech. Her sponsors/supporters also exercised theirs in withdrawing their support for her. Free choice was made on all sides.

Seems a shame, after so many years of getting it right, she will now be remembered for that silly quote.
Wonder if she considered moving back to Europe and handing her apartment keys over to the local Red Indian?

Hmmmmm, do you think she made the remark because she was retiring or she is retiring because she made the remark?

Appalling comment. Imagine if someone said that everyone in America with European roots should go back to Europe.

Obvious that this was going to promote uproar. If she confined her comments to the Palestinian Territories, i.e. the West Bank and Gaza, most would have probably tacitly agreed with her, as it is, her comments will inevitably be construed as anti-semitism.

At the age of 89, I doubt she'll lose too much sleep over it.

Does she not know why the Jews left Germany and Poland in the first place?

Not to sound agist but she turns 90 in a few months. She has been doing that job a long time and perhaps its time to yield such a plum assignment to someone younger.

A pity. No chance she could continue in her role after that comment . A sad end to such a longspanning career.

There are those who believe that the Germans and the Poles have cleaned up their act and that the Pogroms couldn't happen again, nor the Holocaust. They want to have a close look at the Polish Catholic party for a start.
