Poor Gove is ok Sky having to answer a litany of specific job questions where loads of people are unclear on the info they've been given.

Very bad interview. Johnson's been ok at faking gravitas at points in this. Gove can't. He speaks too quickly hedges too often and ends up sounding shifty.

What the hell is wrong with British voters???
For years Boris told them he wanted to TAKE BACK CONTROL. So they voted for him, and now complain that he's gone and done exactly what he said he'd do??
What the hell is the matter with them??

Boris: Just doing what it said on the the side of the bus

It is curious how poor the planning is- no real guidance to what an ‘essential worker’ is: ‘essential for my profits’, ‘essential for the survival of this business’ , ‘ essential if we are to keep our market share’?

In the midst of this are a lot of people just trying to do the right thing.

What he is telling them to do is exactly the opposite of what he said two weeks ago, when it was all about "herd immunity".

At least he looks like he will stick with this policy, unlike his Uncle Trump.

Yes a lot of confusion abounds and no real guidance from the UK government apart from a list of retail shops types which should close , the UK radio phone ins have been full of people asking should they be working or not , i.e. construction , estate agencies etc etc it seems as if the employer deems it essential then it is.

The Irish Government is likely to announce similar measures later today , you would hope they have leaned from confusing messaging in the UK and they clearly state what essential work is during this crisis.

That's generally what shifty people sound like.

Gove will be fine, so long as he has the soil of his homeland to rest in he can sleep for a few decades and start his reign anew.

It‘s a serious national flaw in our thinking, highlighted long ago by Joe Lee in his great work, Ireland 1912-1985, Politics and Society. Britain and America don’t have all the answers and their sheer size often makes their solutions unsuitable for us.
Understandable to an extent. After we gave up Irish, for the superior utility of the English language (O'Connell, IIRC) it seems that we decided that English is the only language worth knowing. As a collectivity; because on an individual level most people I know speak one or more European languages, to a greater or lesser extent.

We speak English because it is a world language and was imposed on us in colonial times.

It is a world language because of the dominance of the British Empire in the 19th century and the dominance of the US in the 20th century.

The ability of the inhabitants of many European countries to speak English is impressive.

They had to learn it as a second language while we did not.

O'Connell was a lawyer and the Irish language was banned in the courts, so that might have influenced his view.

Prince Charles's infection of Covid-19 shows just how ridiculous and cruel Johnson's "herd" policy would have been if implemented given that the 71 years old royal family member in the so-call population B couldn't even be "protected", as chanted by Johnson and his supporters. People around the world should get real!

There is no argument about the fact that we speak English because it was imposed on us by the decisions of the colonial power in London.

So was the border, the famine and, funny enough given how we identify with county, the county system of local government.

The dioceses imposed from Rome did a very different division on the country based on the old Gaelic divisions.

The counties have no relevance to the old Gaelic divisions.

It is ironic that the division of county Dublin with its 1.3 million inhabitants into four counties Dun Laoire, South Dublin, Dublin City and Fingal by the native government in Dublin is not recognised by the GAA.

The famine had more to do with gavelkind than London.
