The realities of life under the Israeli occupation were really brought home to me in this latest article by Al Jazeera:

Killing them slowly: Diabetes in Palestine - News from Al Jazeera

Life under Israeli occupation has spurred the progress of diabetes, the leading indirect cause of death in Palestine.

"... His story is far from unique, as Israel controls nearly all aspects of Palestinian economic life. Palestinian arable land occupied by Israel for military and settler use amounts to two-thirds of the West Bank, leaving Palestinian unemployment rates among the highest in the world.

"Poverty and unemployment is directly linked to inactivity and a poor diet. That is a recipe for diabetes," said Ahmad Abu al-Halaweh, who manages the mobile clinic and serves as director of the Diabetes Care Center at the Augusta Victoria Hospital in occupied East Jerusalem..."

And:

"... An estimated 15 percent of Palestinians have been officially recorded as suffering from diabetes, compared with a global average of nine percent. But Abu al-Halaweh believes the real number in Palestine is higher - more than 20 percent.

"In the surrounding areas of Yatta, we believe half of the adult population has Type 2 diabetes. But many of them don't know they have it," he told Al Jazeera, blaming the region's high unemployment rates and lack of education for the increased rates.

The Israeli occupation has exacerbated the diabetes crisis in a number of ways, "especially the psychological stress that comes from it", Abu al-Halaweh added.

"People in Gaza or Palestinian refugees suffer from an even poorer diet," he said, noting that one-third of Palestinians are considered to be short of food. "They may not have nutritional deficits in terms of calories, but the food aid they receive can be pallets of canned tuna eaten for weeks. Such an unvaried diet is not optimal...
"

But, that's not all. The Israelis are also seemingly behind a rise in diabetes right across the middle east:

Diabetes Rates Are Rising in the Middle East | FoodTank.com

"... The rate of diabetes in parts of the Arabian Peninsula is over twice the global average rate, and much higher than some other areas of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). And cases of type-2 diabetes outnumber cases of type-1 diabetes by a ratio of 10:1.

According to the International Diabetes Federation Atlas, 19.3 percent of adults aged 20 to 79 in the United Arab Emirates are diabetic. In Bahrain, the percentage rises to 19.6—and the statistic jumps to 20 percent for Kuwait, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia. These five nations all rank within the top 15 nations in the world for highest rate of diabetes per capita.

Also ranking within the top 40 are the MENA countries of Egypt, Oman, and Lebanon, though diabetes rates there are much closer to the global average. In contrast, diabetes prevalence for this age range is only five percent in the Gulf nation of Yemen.

Qatar, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia also rank in the top 15 countries for obesity; Qatar ranks highest, at number six..."

It seems that the Israelis have managed to engender:

"... A deadly combination of overeating and junk food, along with low levels of exercise, is undermining attempts to control the spread of the disease, which is linked to obesity. With the incidence of obesity increasing, especially among children, the growth of diabetes is one of the region’s most pressing healthcare issues..."

Indeed I thought this was perhaps quite like Holodomor (the "real Holocaust" perpetuated by Bolshevik Jews according to certain quarters). So I think the question certainly arises what can we do about crimes of this scale this time around?

Without a doubt the Israeli Jews are certainly the root cause of all the problems in the middle east. What a monstrous people!

I opened this hoping but that it would contain interesting debunking the insane propaganda around the supposed Holodomor in Little Russia in the 1930s, but alas it wasnt; however it is something interesting that Joseph Stalin gets labeled by some quarters as a raging antisemite and by others as a blood thirsty agent of the Jews who was probably Jewish himself.

That's a new one on me.

One of the most persistent antisemitic tropes, very popular in the middle east, put through Alice's looking glass.

Out of curiosity, do you have any evidence that any Jew or "Zionist" has ever said anything like this, or say drawn a cartoon like the following?:

Fasting and binge-eating is a risk factor for diabetes. Tom Hanks contracted it after dramatic weight gain and loss for parts.

So it looks like yet another Muslim custom - ramadan - is bad for you.

Bonkers, yes.

But there's a steady diet of these type of articles, and great armies of "bonkers" people ready to believe them.

Its the historic name for the Ukraine and Jospeh Stalin took part in grave injustices, he also did a tremendous amount of good, he was brilliant man but also one who could be on occasion brutal- probably the most complex figure of the 20 th century. Over all I believe though, along with millions of ordinary Russian people both believing and unbelieving that good outwayed the bad in him.

I always attempt to be nuanced and balanced though it doesnt come exactly naturally to me unlike to yourself apart when it comes to issues around Palestine and the Jews where you throw that out the window.

It is interesting though that Joseph Stalin gets accused of both being a murderous Jewish agent AND a bloody thirsty antisemite for what it says about both Judeophiles AND Antisemites.

Uh regular fasts are actually good for you- people dont binge eat during Ramadan.

Diatibes can come from stufffing yourself particularly with sweet foods as happens no doubt in the wealthy countries of the Gulf, or from impoverished diets as happens no doubt in Palestine, roc_ has shot himself in the foot with this thread.

That comment would have you barred from the British Labour Party, you'd have been labeled an antisemite.

One guy drew that cartoon one.

Or are you suggesting that he submitted it to the Arab world entire before publishing it with their approval?

Oh and have you ever heard of metaphor or allegory? If you aren't familiar with these things then please never look at a cartoon again lest you go mad, it is central to the medium.

The antisemitic trope of "Jews kill children" has always been the cry of the mob underlying every persecution and lynching of the Jews in the history of their persecution as a people.

Always. Why should it be any different in the current period of their persecution?

Notwithstanding all the "joking" above (where this trope is actually supposed to be leveled at Arabs by the Jews..). And notwithstanding that the erstwhile rationale for the accusation (that relates to the "eating" of children by Jews) is even still very alive in the middle east today...

And that particular depiction of this trope was actually published in a number of middle east newspapers, as per the link underneath it.

But what if they DID kill children for religious purposes? So what? The Jews of today are not the Jews of 1250.
You cannot use modern PC norms to whitewash people who lived millenia ago of any negative suggestion made about them.

Christians were engaging in the ritual religious sacrifice of mainly women as recently as the 18th C (otherwise known as witch burning).

What if a trope or accusation is based on truth? Do we ignore it because some 'authority' says it is antisemitic or do we let the 'truth' part of it tingle instead? Zionists deny everything and play the antisemite card over everything so if it is the former then effectively they are always above criticism deserved or not.

.
Black magic carried the death penalty in pre-Christian European societies to, also its important to remember that the "Witch craze" didnt happen in the Middle Ages but in the Early Modern Period and particularly in England under the Cromwellian commonwealth and Scotland. Also more men were than women were accused of it before the "Witch craze".
