The government should only put taxes on cigarettes as a disincentive. It shouldn't keep increasing the taxes every year, or else, as we have seen, criminals will enter the market to provide a cheaper alternative.
Correct. Increasing taxes on legal cigarettes is only an incentive to buy cheaper illegal cigarettes.

So why are all the eejits objecting to property taxes then? Sure haven't you just fingered the solution to the housing problem yourself? And where are you leaving water? Charge enough for it and there'll be people selling it by the bottle. :D

Are you suggesting that if the government raises property taxes too much people will abandon their homes and start living in cheaper illegal houses which the government can't tax? How would that work?

Holy Smokes! - Cigarette Factory uncovered in Co Meath!!!

11 arrested after illegal cigarette factory uncovered in Co Meath
Gardaí and customs officers have uncovered an illegal cigarette production factory in Co Meath.
Eleven people aged between their 20s and 50s from eastern Europe, including Bulgaria and Romania, have been arrested and are being questioned at garda stations in Co Louth.

Hopefully they have lost a Packet....
Shocking news. lol.

Was that a Garda operation? I mean the Gardai run the operation on Moore Street so I was just wondering.

Maybe the Romanians in Co.Meath weren't coughing up the fat envelope every week. Romanians eh?

I`ll bet you haven't stopped ejaculating since !
smoking causes erectile dysfunction. Maybe it should be compulsory for some types out there.

Maybe the Government should put a high tax on academic textbooks. Then all the knackers can get involved in the production and consumption of these.

This was always going to happen with the government policy for tobacco. They gifted it to criminals with a big red bow. Taxes should never be used to influence behaviour just purchase services.

But the lads making them weren't paying any PAYE, PRSI and USC! :p
They also didn’t adhere to any health and safety policy meaning it was probably mixed with God knows what.

There must have been a considerable amount of coming and going to this illegal factory --good that it was discovered--hope those involved will be locked away for a long while

As well as the loss to the revenue which the left downplays despite wanting free everything for everyone paid for by the government - there is a serious health issue around these criminal gang cigarette enterprises. While cigarettes are not good in any form these are a mishmash of all sorts of gunk and a serious health hazard. The students in our school all smoke this shi t and buy it from a house in the town - I can't believe that the Gardai don't know about this seller and many others across the country

I hear the Gardaí were Tipped off...
You'd have to surmise from the information to hand, that they needed to be. How could an operation that size be ongoing under their noses and not notice it?

No. Cheaper houses taxed at a lower rate. The Guards might be stupid, but I somehow suspect you wouldn't get away with houses sold on the black economy. Well, not lashings of them anyway.

No.

The RTE and Irish times websites are wrong.

The illegal factory was found in Jenkinstown County Louth - close to the border and not far from Slabtown.

(The RTE website has now been revised.)
