Homophobia in Eastern Europe

The right-wingers were too stupid to see this and reacted as the organisers anticipated.

This has the beneficial effect to the Serbian homosexual lobby of painting all their their detractors as violent homophobes. The thousands who took part in a peaceful religious demonstation the previous evening will be ignored and the western world will now visualise all anti- homosexual agenda demonstators as skinhead fascists.

This is the political reality of what happened.
Right and Left in Serbia are a little different than in western Europe.

The Democrats are socially liberal but economically to the right.

The Radical Party are socially conservative, ultra-nationalist but economically to the left....In many ways Serbia is a sick society that hasnt yet gotten over the effects of the proxy war fought against multicultural socialist Yugoslavia and the lies told about them by the BBC, etc.

The only skulls that were going to be smashed were those of the skinheads.

The marchers had the protection of the police.
It didn't stop 1,500 of them being badly beaten, did it?

I thought there was only a thousand homosexual marchers? Was the violence not between the police and the skinheads?

Interior Minister Ivica Dacic said police estimated that 6,000 rioters faced 5,600 policemen. Serbian riot police fought running battles with thousands of far-right supporters who hurled Molotov cocktails and stun grenades to try to disrupt a gay pride march in central Belgrade.

More than 140 people were hurt and more than 200 were arrested, officials said.

The marchers had the protection of the police and how long did it take though to get that? There is a history of homophobia in Serbia and this has more or less radicalised the far right into hating us , we don't go out looking for trouble anything but. I am not a fan of pride but I still agree that they have a right to have it but why we have it are viewed differently by you and me. From your posts I can tell you are somewhat religious and this is what I would believe is clouding your judgement, you may say its my liberalism that is clouding mine! During the civil war in the former Yugoslavia homophobia was rife throughout the area, it was publicised on TV and radio. Serbian homophobia I am reading at the moment is described as the following

Boban Stojanovic, who runs the gay rights group Queeria with Azdejkovic, said homophobia in Serbia stems from an obsession with national identity in the 1990s, a notion of aggressive masculinity created by and for the Yugoslav wars, and the increased influence of the Orthodox Church.

To say that the protestors brought it on themselves is pure bollox, the right wing and the church loving populace ought to educate themselves a bit more

I am not saying that "they got what they deserverd etc etc".

As I understand it, the violence was between the Serbian police and the ritoers.

This was a perfect outcome for th e homosexual marchers for reasons I posted earlier.

Well the rioters gave themselves enough rope and hung themselves, no one to blame but themselves for getting their heads kicked in. And yep, the gay rights organisations came out smelling of roses and fair play to them if it helps their cause I cant blame them

Perhaps the ordinary Serb does not sign up to 'liberal values' like the rest of west. For most people dancing half naked on the streets simulating sex act is revolting to the vast majority of people. We accept it under the guise of 'tolerance'.
Well said. Those who oppose the agenda to browbeat people into accepting homosexual activity as "normal" have just as much right to express their opposition as half-naked posers have to prance around busy streets proclaiming their "pride".

Easy now, an orderly queue please to rip my statement apart (freedom of speech and all that jazz!)

Serbs whether they are religious or not see the Orthodox Church as something which defines their history and culture (which it does).

Also bare in mind that those protesting are mainly LEFT-nationalists.

Approval of homosexuality is seen by them as something that defines the "west" against other cultures and given the bombing and lies that they have endured by the Brits and the Yanks they make a big deal out of dissaproving of it....Though to my mind their disapproval goes way to far.

People can express their opinion thats never a problem but when it comes to physical voilence, thats not expressing an opinion

Yeah there is....But also in Serbia boys a lot of shy about showing off their chests or showing physical affection to each other in a way that would be considered "gay" here...Interesting question; what effects has all this blazingly open homosexuality in the west had on normal boys and men?

There should be a traveller pride festival in Ireland. But then again, judging by some of the comments on here, the effect a traveller pride march would have on settled people would be such that everyone would want to be a traveller...

Ive been to Serbia and was actually shocked by the amount of "homophobia" there and the belief that the west, especially the UK and the USA, was overflowing with homosexuality, its seen as a "western disease". It really does seem that the further east you go the more "homophobic" people become.
And the further South you go...as in places like Zimbabwe and Uganda.

Well, that goes to show the "Imperialist heartland" is on the right track sometimes.

Which is strange considering that in many cases homophobic attitudes came from the West or from the Middle East. Homophobia is relatively new to Africa as well.

Nothing, we were still homosexual regardless of being exposed to it...all of us normal men remained gay before it. What is your opinion SS on the openess of sexuality in Ireland? Does it turn people gay, would be interested in hearing....

We in the West have embraced homosexuality, and now they are promoting homosexuality in schools and shoving gay marraige in our faces.

At least the Serbs have the balls to burn the offices of their ruling party, something the effeminised men of Ireland and Britain would never do.
See thats the thing . No one has to 'embrace' anything . Nothing is being 'shoved' in anyones face .

As for 'the effeminized' men of Ireland , I'd much rather be one of those than a confused, right wing , skinhead , closet homosexual like many Serbian men appear to be . Spending their time fantasizing about 'gay' conspiracies that dont exist .
