All cigarette packets will carry graphic images of diseased lungs and rotting teeth from tomorrow (1 Feb).

Minister for Health James Reilly said he hopes the pictures will shock smokers into quitting and prevent young people from taking up the habit.

“Half, or one in two, of all long-term smokers will die from smoking related diseases,” he warned. “This is a stark statistic. There is no doubt that if tobacco were discovered today, knowing what we know about its lethal effects, it would not be a legal product.”
Generally speaking I'm opposed to the government telling adults what they can and can't do to their own bodies. I'm still dubious about the total smoking ban in pubs that was introduced ten years ago. But I don't have a problem with the State increasing awareness, including using shock tactics, for the purposes of public health. This proposal sounds like a good idea; I just hope one of these new packs is put in front of my face while I'm eating!

In fairness, the concern for the health of other employees in places of employment was a very good reason to ban smoking in pubs.

I've nothing against measures to prevent disease and improve physical health.

However, it does mean that more and more people are likely to spend years in nursing homes suffering from:

You can't win! :|

We have them in England already. They are so disturbing that I have to stop and have a smoke. Particularly the facial hair on that bloke with the neck tumour.

I blame Europe.
Luton Town?

I knew you were nuts.

Those teeth were not caused solely by smoking and kids aren't stupid enough to fall for that either. If you're not honest with your scare tactics they will have the opposite effect to the the desired one.

Hmmm.... I'll think I'll set up a new business. Making sleeves for ciggarette boxes to veil those horrible images.
Same thought crossed my mind. :)

They are already available ...

... but I'm sure there would be a market for holders with added scenic Irish images, political slogans, etc.
