Representatives of the two meat companies involved in the horse meat scandal made representations to the minister about restrictive practices by Vets in the factories about two weeks before the news broke.

Apparently, the vets refuse to work more than two hours at a time in the refrigerated environment, after which a colleague must take over his duties so there are two on duty at all times. But the vets have an informal arrangement amongst themselves to work one day on, one day off so clearly they can work for longer than two hours at a time.

it is interesting that the department should break this story so shortly after these representations were made. Very interesting indeed.

To be honest it is a total non story, lads playing the system to make their lives easier is hardly anything new either in the private or public sector, so as you say, why the fuss being made of it, why are we being distracted like this?

Dunno about the details in the OP, but the Dept Vets in the factories are a total sham,

It's little more than a protection racket,

Break what story - that beef burgers contained horse meat ?
Was it not the FSAI who revealed this - is this their function as a regulatory body.
Do you think, whatever report, should have been buried to safeguard jobs and profit margins?
