How do you rank Brexit in the pantheon of great political events in your lifetime

The political commentators are calling it seismic!

As an adult, in my opinion the most significant political events has been in order -

The Fall of The Berlin Wall/ end of the cold war

Bailout for The Troika and austerity imposition on ordinary people

The Good Friday Agreement

and now probably Brexit (a bit to early to say, it may go above GFA)

Prior to that still in my lifetime -

Joining The EU

American defeat in Vietnam

Losing a good friend and ally in The Britz will be huge, but it may be lessened in its impact slightly if as likely they become a Switzerland/Norway in their relationship with The EU!

In Irish terms it ranks alongside the State joining the EEC (with UK & Denmark) in 1973

- & with the GFA of 1998

+ the Troika of 2010

Internationally

- only time will tell.....

For sure though the Fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 was the catalyst that changed Europe

- very much so the impact of that on Ireland has been huge

- in ways we just did not

- nor could not have foreseen back then

How is it possible to rank an event [Brexit] that has not happened and over which some doubt now exists as to whether it will in fact ever happen?

A binary referendum exposed a small margin of voters favourably disposed to leave the EU.
That is all that has actually happened.

Let's keep a grip and not get carried away here.

Of course I'm looking at it relevant to Ireland, but ahead of The GFA already?
BTW if The Berlin Wall never fell, it's quite possible there would be no GFA!
Definitely, ahead of The twin towers and ISIS bollek acting!

In terms of shock value its just behind 9/11.

In terms of long term geopolitical impact id rank it behind the fall of communism but ahead of the Arab Spring. I expect the UK not to exist 12 months from now.

Nothing is happening.
A tiny margin won on a single issue popular referendum by expressing a desire to leave the EU.

What is importent is that nearly half those who voted want to remain PLUS a large majority of the elected representatives in the body that takes the actual decision.

Further political consultation is therefore essential to ascertain if a significant majority of the British people wish to leave the EU.

It is my strong opinion that such a significant majority has not yet been shown to exist.

For one thing it is the biggest set back for the Freemasonic Lodge since the sublime Joseph Stalin and Alexandra Kollontai outfoxed their lads in the CPUSSR and sent them to the hang man's noose though admittedly their main lad in it was only to see justice years later from an ice pick in Mexico.

Come back when they've gone.
They're working right now to stop it happening.
