How many By Election defeats can Micháel Martin survive as Fianna Fáil leader? For that matter how many by election wins can he survive? Why is no Fianna T. D. prepared to depose him? Why do they have confidence in him? Could they please explain?

Do you find it extraordinary that Micháel Martin is still leader of Fianna Fáil after serving 14 years in a Cabinet of the Government that destroyed the economy, wrecked the banks and bankrupted the State?

What latent ability does Michael have that he is expected to harness in the future that he concealed during his 14 years in Cabinet in the previous Fianna Fáil Governments?

Would it not be in the best interests of the Irish People if he withdrew from public life and service, as even he must admit that he has not served Ireland or it's people well!

Given his part failures what makes him think he can do any better in the future?

14 years is a long time trying to gain competence. Can he really expect the Nation to indulge his quest for competence for any additional period of time?

Is it not all just an ego trip for him to fulfill his ambition to be Taoiseach at any cost to the people ?

But that is the problem. Soon Fianna Fáil could be back in Government. They will need a competent leader who can run the Country . It is a bit like taking to the air with an incomptent pilot!

He was ideal for taking blame but not much use for anything else.

As much as I dislike FF they would be bonkers to change leader. He stays in the background, pulls the strings and has his party heading up the polls at every turn. Whatever he is doing, even if it's nothing, is working.

The only problem I can see with M. Martin is just that.
He'll always be there in the background, a reminder of what went before.
Maybe that's a good thing though.

As long as the polls show increase in % and he now is the most popular party leader, I think the road to Damascus Martin will be alright. Infighting won't happen for a good while as they know this will kill off any soft vote they are attracting. They really have to sit tight let the house tax , water tax and the newly named tv licence tax come in and have it on FG and Labours shoulders and have them branded as the parties to inflict these taxes on the Irish.

It wasn't a 5 point plan and Enda never said it was and he definitely never said it in Roscommon.

It was a .5 plan and it's well on its way to full implementation.

It's remarkable how someone who was sitting at the cabinet table when some of the most disastrous decisions for this country were made can lead the rebound of the party. When it comes to elections, will he be a liability when there is more focus on the leaders of each party?

If the Irish Media ever grow a pair then perhaps they could follow up on this one

http://www.politics.ie/forum/foreign-affairs/135015-fianna-fail-tullow-oil-uganda.html

That might well blow a hole in Mr Martin's ambitions to take Enda's place at the top of the pile...

Forget polls.

They've 19 seats. . . .and Martin was their leader leading them into the last election after 14 years in Cowen/Ahern cabinets.

That's his record.

I also remember Kenny inviting Bertie to come with him to view the patients on hospital trolleys in Beaumont! How his tune has changed.

And that stupid contract that people laughed at.
Say what you like about Kenny. . .he has the largest mandate of any Taoiseach in the history of this state.

Look at your previous leaders - One, Ahern, personally changed the law for one man (a property developer) to help him avoiding paying €1.5 million in BIK to revenue in the 1990s.

Edit: this was an intended reply to Des Valera and not GG. :)
