Reading the thread German Government Calling On Population To Prepare For ArmageddonI got thinking, how would we do if a sh*t hit the fan scenario played out across Europe?

Say all communications were wiped out, no electricity, all transportation dead, no contact with Europe apart form the odd crackle from a radio informing us that the World was under attack with millions perished. Would Ireland be relatively ok? Or would we see a famine type scenario where we would starve?

What would you do to survive?

Would we have enough food and water to feed the populace?
Would you steal from neighbours, friends and family?

How bad could it get here?

Same as always, the majority suffers whilst the insiders benefit from an 'opportunity'

If its not an enviormental disaster, then this country could feed itself, obviously would be problematic, but we export a hell of lot more food that we consume, so the basic requirements for food production, land and animals would still exist. However, the skills to carry out any cultivating of crops and processing of food is so mechanised now , reckon we'd be eating the cows and pigs first, followed by pidgeon pie and so on!

Food security is actually a very real concern in mainland Europe, when at any given time they have only a short period of time where they have sufficient supplies of food for the population. Some argue they need bigger producers with economies of scale in France etc, while others believe its the micro producer is key.

9 meals away from anarchy becomes more realistic every decade, as towns become cities and cities become metropoles. The refrigerated trucks that deliver food to these run on diesel by the way, so the next time you see a tosser with a placard with " It's all about oil " on, kick them.

What type of armageddon? Nuclear war? Tsunami? Bird flu?

I think overall we would be relatively fine. We produce more than enough food to feed ourselves and we don't have any metropolis like London or Istanbul which would be a burden on the rest of the country.

In a nuclear war we can expect that there's quite a few targets here that would get hit:

- Dublin port and airport
- Intel
- Analog Devices in Limerick
- Shannon and Knock airports
- Possibly Rosslare harbour.
- Whitegate oil refinery in Cork
- Aughinish alumina might be a target depending on who is shooting who. Its now Russian owned I believe.

If you live within 30km of these your going to have a bad day. The electricity supply system would shut down without oil and coal imports. We'd have enough food for a while but distributing would be difficult. Hospitals, water, communications, etc would all close within days - or become useless.

Probably within a few weeks we'd get occupied by our neighbouring countries who would ship out the food to feed their own people.

A nuclear war would be mainly a northern hemisphere thing. Anyone who could would try and emmigrate to less effected countries in Africa and South America.

Within a year or two the population would have fallen below 500,000 and reverted to subsistence labour intensive farming. Horses would be more valuable than now useless cars.

Basically it would be a swift return to the middle ages. Some people would survive. Many wouldn't try as they would rightly see there is no point.

Riots, looting a complete breakdown of law and order followed by a mass exodus from cities into the country side and coastlines, farmers and fishermen without the fuel needed for large scale food production would try and feed as many as possible but would be regularly robbed by marauding gangs.
No food, transport, communication, medicine, sanitation or security would lead to starvation and disease and a drop in population by as much as 90%.
What would it look like? Armageddon.

Zombies? The machines turn against us?
Japanese Knotweed, Giant Hogweed and Rhododendrons would run wild and choke the countryside. It would be like the Day of the Triffids!

So the traditional Dublin tourist exodus to the country?

I would strongly recommend that people watch the 1980's Nuclear War Mockumentary "Threads"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Threads

Threads is a 1984 BAFTA award-winning British television drama, produced jointly by the BBC, Nine Network and Western-World Television Inc. Written by Barry Hines and directed by Mick Jackson, it is a docudrama account of nuclear war and its effects on the city of Sheffield in Northern England.
It's images has with stuck me 3 decades since.
