If they're anything like the call centre jobs at their Clonskeagh operation, this is not good news.

The jobs will be within HP's services unit:

Recruitment has begun for 300 of the 500 positions. The services desk will provide a range of services, including onsite IT support, service desk functions, data centre management and business process outsourcing. HP moved its multilingual support centre from its Clonskeagh offices to Leixlip last August.

Hasnt HP let people go from more high tech jobs than this ? Basically theyre firing people from high paid tech jobs and hiring people at much lower wages for their call centre who can speak foreign lanaguages for these new jobs. The result will be that immigrants who can speak different languages will get these new low paid jobs, not the locals in Kildare who chances are didnt leave our education system knowing any languages.

And will these be HP employees with a decent pension plan or will they be contract employees on a tenner an hour?

This utter non sense, looking at low on call centre job. I guess still people have Celtic tiger hangover on their head. job is job. especially given time whats wrong foriegn language call centre. Those 500 jobs will create another 100 jobs at least on the community. Keep at least 300 houses occupied.

Leixlip in kildare is also the headqurters of intel in ireland almost all of north kildare work in one of the twp facilities, I dont care if the jobs go to foreigners, they will work ion kildare, and therefore the kildare economy will benefit and jobs for more people will be craeted.
Ina downturn fewer people will want new kit, but will want advice instead on how to fix their old kit, so it makes sense tech support is expanding.

My bet is 200 gone (give or take 20 either way) and presented with a positive spin that the losses are much less than initially expected, finding new positions for those affected, redundancy packages, unions negotiating a fair deal, reskilling opportunites, ect ect ad nauseum.

Technology moves on. Job losses in Leixlip have probably been more of a "not if but when" for some time now.

I'm just waiting for Ruth Coppinger to call for the HP plant to be nationalised if the rumours prove to be correct...

and she will be allowed to say it unchallenged on some RTE report. When she called for Dell to be Nationalised on RTE was shocking, but the fact that she was not taken to task by the other Politicians and the host, was equally shocking.
