I hate Hipsters!

Honest I really do!

OK I confess - I never even heard of these people till about 10 minutes ago when I read about them online in the Guardian.

Here's a Site which shows like what they look like (presumably in London town)

Look at this ****ing hipster

Have you spotted any around Dublin or elsewhere

- RU1 yourself?

What on earth is this all about?

...or maybe I'm just getting old....

They're everywhere. I think it's the accepted look for urban cowardly whites of indiscriminate sexual preference. Awful!

Yes. They can be spotted any night in Whelans or any time of the day or night in a place called Anois (or is it Solas, I forget) just across the road. Fortunately, they rarely breed - too weak from a diet of heroin and expressos.

Note, I am not suggesting everyone who frequents Whelans falls into this category. Normal people who like music go there too. Hipsters don't even like or know anything about music, it's just a pose.

Yes, they exist in Ireland. Frank McNally wrote about them in the Irish Times regarding the recent Joanna Newsom concert:

I had no real idea what sort of people would turn up at the show – for which the Grand Canal Theatre was sold out – especially when it emerged that the support act was 1970s folkie Roy Harper, whose career Newsom has revived. But I was taken aback at how alike – at least physically – most of the audience seemed to be.

They were nearly all thin, for one thing. The male attenders also had a strong tendency to have beards. Not big bushy beards like 1970s folkies, or members of the Taliban. No, the beards were thin too. And the most uniform thing about the audience was that – I swear – they were all 27 years old. So, at least when my daughter and I were averaged out, we were about the right age.

I have since learned that many of those present may have been “hipsters”, an exclusive, self-policing subculture of sophisticated urbanites who, according to The Hipster Handbook (2003), “possess tastes, social attitudes, and opinions deemed cool by the cool”. Mind you, the same handbook cautions that hipsters no longer use the word “cool”, preferring “deck” as an adjective of approval. But that was back in 2003, and the codes will all have been changed again since then to prevent the likes of me getting in, no matter how many Joanna Newsom albums we have.

Like Frank I was at that concert and like Frank I would not class myself as a hipster.

These guys have been around for ages...
The bar on Camden St is Anseo...like Whelan's it has it's fair share of hipsters, but most people frequent the place because the DJs play decent tunes...there's an unfortunate overlap between indie/alternative music fans and your genuine hipster...the defining difference seems to be that for hipsters the choice of music only functions to supplement their chosen image (ie, they're faddish, and like things because they're acceptable to their clique), which physically amounts to...
-Skinny jeans
-Questionable facial hair
-Clothing worn for ironic purposes and/or shock value: Horn-rimmed specs (usually with no prescription), Jumpers more commonly worn by middle-aged men (anyone see Andrew Maxwell's one on the Panel?).

They seem fairly harmless, bar being a bit pretentious, vain and holier than thou. I'd prefer to socialise with them than the crowds flocking to Flannery's and Coppers anyway (and I'm a culchie myself...)

Oh, and in US parlance, the term Hipster is usually used in a pejorative sense with the word Douchebag added for good measure...ie, Hipster Douchebag...

Lots more examples to be found here...some pretty funny...

I fear I may have let myself down by knowing a little too much about them...

lots of hipsters are actually obsessive music fans and many are very arty so it's not just a pose, some of them are actually 'cool' in the traditional sense of a creative, alternative person. I'm not one myself as I can't be arsed worrying about the clothes and have no artistic talent.

Showing my age - I thought trousers.

I was a mod - I used to wear them! Thought the same thing when I saw the thread.

they are the most boring bastards in ireland, with the exception of kevin myers and some rte people.

their haircuts appear to have no visible means of support.

and they're almost uniformly from rich families and they will all vote fianna fail back in at the 2015 election.

Aren't hipsters a type of skinny jeans that are low cut enough to show enough 'cleavage' to embarrass a brickie?
