Citing studies linking pornography and violent crime including increasingly ferocious rapes and detrimental effects on children, the Icelandic government is planning on banning access to all online pornography using a firewall similar to that used by China. Critics have dismissed the plan as unfeasible and branded it censorship.

Utter nonsense and unworkable. They even want adult pornography banned. We all agree child pornography should be (and is) illegal. But it's the height of nonsense to criminalise visual expression of adult sexuality.

Edit: it seems from the Telegraph it's likely to become law. Indeed offline pornography is already legal in Iceland.

Alcohol is linked to violent crime why don't they ban that while they're at it?

P.ie is 'political porn' = banned!

PS so the Icelanders who were touting themselves as a haven of freedom of expression on the net with suggestions of facilitating wikileaks and providing legal protections etc has decided to go down the censorship route instead!!

Hardly porn..although watching the presidential campaign with 5G was I'd imagine like watching a snuff movie, something which I generally would not care for, but I have to admit there was something entrancing about someone ending their political life on Live national TV.

While I can see what they are trying to do and judging by what goes for adult entertainment these days I would not oppose at lest a clamp down on the seriously crazy stuff. Whether or not it will work remains to be seen.

Any member of a govt that advocates ANY regulation of the Internet should be shot, repeatedly in the head!

I commend Iceland for trying to regulate access to porn.

I'm no prude but I wouldn't allow Sky have their unrestricted naked females doing phone sex into our living rooms either. These channels should automatically be blocked until the paying customer unblocks them. I would allow only between 12am and 5am.

I've seen enough Porn in my time to conclude it is time to restrict it to over 18's. Have a look at any teenage girls facebook page (esp Ireland) and you can see many of them are pretty confused. Every second one of them have photos making them look like hookers.

I would restrict all porn over the web until there was proof the viewer was over 18.

Unrestricted access to porn by internet savy 12 - 13 year olds is wrong. It is de facto child abuse and grooming for sex.

While I tend to agree with you, the fact is that in Ireland we have no sex education, internet porn is the first port of call for any curious teenager.

I suppose you found it equally entrancing to see the electoral process successfully gerrymandered by the Irish state owned media corporation RTE to get their favoured left wing candidate elected president of ireland.

We regulate lots of things. We are generally agreed that this stuff is not a positive in our lives. Making it more difficult to access is a good thing.

I am not in favour of political censorship (which most people were happy with for decades). Nor do I favour books being censored. But free and easy access to licentious material delivered to the comfort of your own laptop is a step too far for me. It may be difficult or impractical, but that does not mean it should not be attempted.

Most people connect through an ISP and a search engine. If we even cut the rubbish by 10% it would be worthwhile, although I suspect we'd cut it by 90%

what makes you think that you, or the state, has any right to prevent a consenting adult from viewing any material produced by consenting adults?

Regulate your own internets at home people if you fecking lift your fingers you can control what your kids get onto by restricting them to limited user accounts and then have unrestricted sites only for them to view.

There is also plenty of software out there for adults to do that.
