"if we had joined the European Union we might be where Ireland is today".
Lovely quote from the Swiss TV crew, outside Leinster House, covering Ireland's financial crisis on the Nine O'clock news.

I'd say they won't be in any hurry to join.

This raises the question, though, should we leave the European Union?

The European Union didn't cause this, a collection of dangerous finanical scams aborad coupled with property scams and economic mismanagement here at home caused it.
The only responsibility the EU bears is the arbitrary deficit limits they set.

No the idea of a United Europe is a good one the fact it acts like the bully boy of wealthy banks and corporations is the problem.

There are two ways out of this mess.Leaving the Euro or creating two Euro currencies with different exchange rates.

No they wouldn't and no we shouldn't. We are actually a very different economy to Switzerland with a very, very different history and set of social institutions.

The former is already in the making. The latter we have to do ASAP

I don't see the comparison. We had no infrastructure when we joined the EU, we were a dirt poor rural backwater. Switzerland has been fabulously rich for a while, especially since WWII:D

I think people here need to turn their critical filter on sometimes, just because you like the words someone says, you still need to think about the context and intended audience. Or is that asking too much:(

because every country in the EU is in trouble. Why didn't the pick one of the good counties in the EU? Probably because whoever said this has an agenda.

Leaving the European Union won't solve our problems. Electing competent representatives might

It was an off the cuff remark to RTÉ from a Swiss TV crew, when they asked them what they thought about the crisis here.

The idea that if you gave the Swiss cheap credit that they would blow it on a property bubble at home and abroad and would allow their banks to become casinos is so bizzare I laughed when I heard your man on the TV last night. Come to think of it, they have had cheap credit there for a while now - but the inevitable disaster (as per all the Europhobes) does not yet appear to have arrived. Perhaps its because they invest some of their money in the factories you see the length of a train journey through the north of the country instead of trying to corner the world property market!
