...... and asked for a particular boy, that he might be brought out and shot. They then went to the master, and told him to clear out. They then went to the diningroom, and asked for the boy in charge. The eldest boy stood up. The boys were paraded, and some who were working in the fields were rounded up. The master and the boys were taken away to different parts of the premises. The matron showed great courage. She pleaded to the men to spare the lives of the boys, and asked for a guarantee for their safety. Surrounded by these fully armed barbarians she asked why this was being done, and the answer was – because the boys were being taught loyalty to England, and the orphanage had sent many of the boys into the great war. The whole place was then burnt to the ground, and 33 boys and 25 girls were left absolutely stranded. Anti-Treaty IRA burn Protestant orphanages to the ground in Galway

Excuse my ignorance, but what is the point of this post ?

Do you have a comment on it ? Are you suggesting a debate around it ? What ?

Just to be fair, I am going to report the post as I feel it is designed to troll.. I'll remove my request if you can show due reason as to why you posted it in the first place

Could the person who opened this thread explain to us what he would like us to do? Is this a discussion on history? Is it to do with the service now being provided by the I Times?

To simply copy and paste a report from 1922 without comment or reference to the point you are trying to make is rather silly.

Everyone there that night aremost probably dead. If the point is to show the 1919-1923 IRA/Free State Army were ruthless, well we all know that.

Nonsense. It's an interesting piece of history. A useful reminder of the ways of thinking of the anti-treaty forces at the time of the Civil War, and a question begging to be asked about what the Free State Government did about the affected children's welfare.

Beside constant denials that the drop in the Protestant population of the Free State had anything to do with republican sectarianism it is of particular interest.

Well done Irish Times for printing the story!

Well then the person who started the thread could have prefaced it with a description of what they are trying to achieve. As stated, to copy and paste without comment is just silly.

"Surrounded by these fully armed barbarians she asked why this was being done, and the answer was – because the boys were being taught loyalty to England, and the orphanage had sent many of the boys into the great war".

On that basis the IRA should have burned down every national school in Ireland during the War of Independence since they were teaching the same thing.

I welcome it being published. The first question has to be, is it true. Edward Carson, hardly a friend, raised it in the House of Lords.

The Earl of Crawford, for the Government, regretted that the statement contained in the question was correct. These orphanages contained 33 boys and 25 girls, with a staff, all Protestants. At the beginning of July the orphanage was attacked by the IRA and burned to the ground, and the house in which the girls were accommodated was similarly destroyed. The refugees were brought to London, and accommodation was found for them. The Irish Distress Committee was in constant communication with the treasurer of the orphanages, and it was hoped that arrangements would be made for the future accommodation and welfare of these children at an early date.
Carson said that a British destroyer was sent to Galway to bring the children to England.

Is there any record of this in the Irish Press and what it said, if anything, about this?

At this stage we ought to be able to discuss the Civil War in the history section. There is no call whatsoever to censor the OP.

Is it not of interest whether they died in the country of their birth or not?

Do they have children (some of them must have)?

Has anything done by the State to atone for this atrocity?
Why should the state atone for an atrocity carried out by an organisation that was at war with the State?

I'm shocked that everyone assumes that this is true and that there are no background circumstances worth examining.

Will people ever learn that newspapers are bits of paper with print on them and what they say is only spasmodically a true reflection of reality ?

I'm not dismissing the report, I'm just pointing to the fact that the source at least warrants a bit of double checking.

Because the State had a responsibility to protect its citizens.
They fought a war against the anti-Treaty forces.
They arrested many of them, and interned and shot more than a few.
It is ludicrous to expect a new and unstable government to be responsible for the actions of those that are tryoing to destroy it.
